I have my dash pulled pretty much completely apart at the moment. I have to have it put back together by tomorrow night. I figured now would be the perfect time to go ahead and find the VSS wire to tap my overhead console into.

Where is this wire? I have no wiring diagram to find it. All I know is that it is a gray/black wire coming from the console. I have found a gray/black wire on the computer behind the passenger side kick panel and going into the back of the speedometer. Is one of these wires the right one?

Has anyone who wired in an overhead console actually hooked up the VSS wire? Anyone have a wiring diagram for the entire vehicle that could help me out?

Thanks.

BUMP

Come on guys. Somebody has to know which wire I'm looking for, or at least be able to find out for me.

I tried that address, but it isn't working.

Well considering it's a vehicle speed sensor it is going to the computer. So, depending on your year of Explorer, you can find it coming off of the harness that plugs into the computer.

But, like I said the wire is unneeded. If you were to either plug it in, or leave it just hanging there, you would not notice a difference.

I guess I should've cleared that up. The address to the site worked, but the email address did not. I got a message saying it failed to send or something like that.

I have to hook up the wire because I am a perfectionist. I always go all out, and never do something half way. That's just me

Well, I dont do half-ass jobs either but when you are messing with an important wire of the car, I always take precautions.

Why risk screwing up that wire when it isn't needed?

More ballz than brains? I don't know.
My temp reading ain't hittin' on much and I was hoping connecting that wire will fix it. It's worth a shot. The only readings I ever get are: 83 one time, 73 almost all of the time, 69 every now and then, and 66 all the other times. It'll start off at 73, drop to 69 once I get going, and finally drop to 69 and stay. Any ideas? I'm gonna try a new sensor also.

i hooked up the wire only because it was the only thing left to hook up. i took the cluster out and used the gray/black wire from the harness that plugs into the cluster. the temp does not fluctuate very much, just when i start up the truck and drive off.

but i found the easiest one for me to get to was the one that plugs into the intrusment cluster.

sorry just noticed it was an old thread. really old.

console speed sensor wire

i just installed overhead console in a 2000 xls. i took out the ashtray mount and found grey/black wire on left side of ashtray. used a quick-splice connector. some people think this is for wind chill but i think it is so temp reading is not refreshed while you are stopped in traffic. works great!!!!

haha.. are you guys still using my howto I wrote last year? I haven't been around in ages, just curious.

Thanks,
Quick

Well great, this thread jinxed me! Just yesterday I noticed my temp was reading 75* on the way home from work. The outside air temp was acutally 99*
Crap...what has gone wrong? I disconnected the temp sensor and the readings went to -40* and Ice. I reconnected the sensor and the readings said 98*
The problem is...as soon as I switch the ignition key off and back on...the temp goes back to 75* and stays! Disconnect the sensor and it goes back to 98* until I cycle the key...then 75*
WHAT GIVES? I checked the sensor connections out...solid. I have 4.8 volts at the connector...no shorts. I hate to spend money on a new sensor, but I can't think of anything else to try.
Anyone shed light on this?
Thanks,
Ken
