My stock HU in my Mountaineer is shorting out. Ford told me to replace it for $550. I don't think so! I have a 12" MTX hooked up through a 600w Kenwood to that stock unit. Should I find a replacement stock head unit somewhere or should I buy an aftermarket one? If I go aftermarket, what about connecting stock wires, connecting the 6-disk, and connecting my iPod???

I have the stock one from my '97 Mountaineer I'll let you have for $20 shipped if you decide to go back with a stock HU.

It is the premium with tape only.

Exact same model factory head unit swap would be the easiest for you. I've sold all my old ones on ebay, try there?

I'd definitely opt for replacing the crappy stock HU with an aftermarket one. Personally, I like Clarion HUs ...lots of features, good power output, but a little on the pricey side. Everyone has their own opinion on what's good or bad. The best thing to do is to shop around and find one that suits your needs.

If you want an easy fix, Davesexplorer is right ...just try and find a stock replacement. As you might know, the stock HUs are prone to the notorious dying display problem, so make sure the display works before ya buy a used one. I'd be happy to just give you my stock one, but the display is dead, and I'm not sure it would work with the CD changer.

Good luck

Yo Davesexplorer ...I just noticed you're in PSUland too. Cool to see another Penn Stater here. I just checked your ride on Sounddomain. You've got a clean lookin' truck and nice job on the stereo!

Thx (sorry to threadjack)

I've seen your truck downtown as well, very nice lookin! Pretty much what I want to do next, black wheels and slightly larger tires.

Thanks for the input guys, but I think I will just replace the factory HU. A new would definately be nice, but with the other repairs I have to make now, I need to save some $$$$.

Dan W - I'll buy that stock one off of you, I just want to make sure it's the right one and that it works. I took some pics of mine.. but for some reason this thing won't let me put pics in. I'll post some in my profile.

To the PA boys...ready for the ND game????

Hmm... guess I can't upload pics there either.

I'll just have to join the elites!

I know it has the CD changer control built in because at one time I had thought about adding one.

It worked fine when I took it out 4 years ago.
If it does not work when you receive it I will refund your money :)

Sounds good, I uploaded pics of my HU in my gallery... If they're the same - let me know where to send the $$$.

I'll check when I get home from work today. The front of the HU looks the same but the one I have has a little heat sink on the back of it.

The one I have also tapers up on the top of the HU where yours is flat.

Do you know if yours came with the premium sound system with the rear factory sub?

Oh yes, I'm ready for PSU to stomp on ND. I'm throwing a combo PSU-bachelor party that day which means strippers after the game
...I can't wait

Awesome! I'll be working though, mandatory work for football :(

I don't have the factory sub... So I dont know if that will work or not.

And that PSU party sounds sweet, I may be in State College that weekend visiting a friend. Susquehanna throws crappy parties.

rappo mine will not work for you.

The premium sound system does not have the amp built into the HU. The amp is seperate & is behind the right rear interior panel. The antena on the premium system plugs into the seperate amp as well & not to the back of the HU.

Bummer, thanks anyway!
