My explorer will only shift from 1st to 2nd gear by letting off gas, it will shift all other gears if i'm giving about 1/4 throttle, but if i'm giving anything over 1/4 throttle it will not shift at all...

anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

If this has already been covered in a post, please point me in the right direction...

BTW...
transmission = A4LD
already changed filter and fluids

Welcome to this forum! Did you find any band parts in the pan? Does this shifting problem only occur when it's cold, then slowly go away as it warms up?

I bought this explorer used cheap cause of the trans.
first thing i done was changed the trans filter and fluid, and changed the modular valve on side of trans...

trans fluid didn't look too bad (no shavings or pieces of bands)

and i changed it again about 3 months ago... still looks pretty good

actually the first time i start the explorer for each day, it will shift normal through all gears once.... after i come to a stop and take off again is when the problem starts (after trans. has warmed a bit)

any ideas?

Likely as BB surmised initially high probability a broken intermediate band. Drop the pan.

Badly leaky intermediate servo is an alternative.

Both called by BB...

I'll look again but no pieces 3 months ago......

I have had this explorer for about 2 years, and it has always had this problem since i got it.

btw... never adjusted bands or kickdown cable

i'll try kickdown cable in the morning and look in the trans pan again

i adjusted the kickdown cable, and checked the pan again(still no broken pieces there)

i will adjust the bands next week when i'm off work....thanks guys

I have a 91' XLT,and I noticed, the same problem, it only shifts, if I let off the pedal, or BABY it, this all started bout 1 week after I replaced the Transfer Case Motor, that could be just a coincidence, Haven't had anytime to look into correcting it cause I wanted to get on this site,to get some insight on where to look first.Good Luck Burnmaster, I'll let you know what it was,
