OK, I'm about to buy my 3rd Explorer. I hate the buying process. Here's the deal. If the "dealer invoice" is, say $29,000, and the guy offers to add "only $300" to his "cost", what should my counter be? I know the dealer invoice thing is BS, but I don't want to force it so low he won't respond. What makes it complicated is that I want the current 60 month 0% offer (which is equivalent to a roughly $2500 factory incentive). And Ford has a "free moonroof" incentive going on, but both are already reflected in the Dealer Invoice. Of course the dealer is whining about how they now won't make anything on the moonroof. Also, the dealer invoice reflects a $350 advertising charge to the Dealer (this sounds like bogus fat to me). So, if he offers $300 over dealer invoice, what should I counter for a good deal, given all the Ford incentives - which are darn nice I might add. I just don't want them to be an excuse for my Dealer to make out better than he should. Thanks,

Mitch

Go to edmunds.com and see what they recomend you pay for your configuration.

A Ford dealer near me offers their cars / trucks at Invoice price plus the rebates and with no dealer charges or add ons. I think this will be the best way to go, if you can get financing at at a low rate.
I have been told, that with a decent down payment, a loan with low apr of 5%, and rebates of $2500 or more, you will still come out ahead if you went with the 0%.

BTW they were selling 2003 X Sports with loaded with leather, 6 CD player for around $20,600 (msrp was around $26,000) plus tax and tag.

You might want to talk to the fleet department at your local Ford dealership and see what they can do for you. I've purchased all of my family's cars from the fleet dept. at my local dealership ('99 and '00 Tauruses, '01 Explorer and an '03 Focus). Depending on the car I pay invoice price or lower and get all rebates and special financing. I've wanted some pretty specific colors and options on my cars and they've always found me exactly what I've wanted. It's a great way to go if you want to get a decent deal and not have to bother with a typical consumer salesperson.
