Well, a sudden overheating is usually due to a bad thermostat. As for the jolt, it needs to be seen how much it happens.

When the thermostat fails the computer will bump up your idle to try and get the engine to cool off a bit. The transmission will also shift harder (more of a jolt) as well. If you have a SOHC it is almost a sure bet that you need a new thermostat. This year is time for the '99s to start failing. Very common. I wouldn't drive it too far without getting it replaced or you could do some serious damage. Is a $4000 engine worth your trip?

Im just going to say DO NOT DRIVE AN OVERHEATING CAR. Not to the mall, not down the block, not to pick up a friend. If you continue to drive a vehicle that overheats you'll ruin things and deserve it:(

thanks guys for all the help. im going to have my car towed to the dealer after work. hopefully this extra care warranty will cover the costs and labor. does anyone know what exactly Fords ExtraCare Policy covers? thanks again..

it will cover it. the dealer charges about $80 for a Tstat change.
