About two weeks ago, my '98 Explorer started making a loud clanking noise which seemed to be coming from the front left wheel well. However, the sound would come and go. It didn't seem to matter if the car was in 4x4 or not.

The faster the car went, the faster the clanking noise.

The car has been at a Ford dealership for over a week, and they are not sure what it is.

Hoping someone can help me identify it.

Thanks.

Loose brake pad/caliper? When exactly does it make the noise?? going straight, turning, both?

I agree, more than likely it's the brakes. Happen to me a few weeks ago, except mine were the rear ones.

Currently having the same problem. I soon as I find out how I fixed mine I will let you know. This is what I know so far:

It is not the brakes, not the sway bar end links, and not the lower ball joints.
