Yesterday my wifes 06 explorer went crazy. Gas cap light came on, changed it fixed that. 30miles later came back on and check engine light also. Had it checked evap system came on. They turned it off and it ran better for 20 min. Then they all came back on and rough idle insued followed by ac stopping. This all happened within a 2hr span. A.C has started back blowing cold for about 5min then shuts back off. This is insane. any help would be appreciated. This is our family vehicle we have 5 kids and need it going. rough idle starts then clears. the exhaust is very hot is this a converter issue or what? It all started when my wife filled the truck up while it was running.:help:

Check the evaporative canister, solenoid and lines under the vehicle that feed from the tank back to the engine. It sounds like a major vacuum leak in the system.

I think you have two independent problems.... you know what they say... "when it rains it pours".

It sounds like the ac clutch or compressor is acting up. I can't see how that would affect the idle unless the the ac compressor jammed or something (causing extreme load on the belt). You might first want to check that to be sure the clutch or the compressor aren't causing extreme loads on the belt. If they are... the belt is probably slipping and you will see if it is heating up or jamming. Also wouldn't hurt to check the pressure of the system to see if it is in operating range...

As for the gas cap light... the evap system is a common problem on the 4.0 (problem mentioned above). I had a similar problem and it wouldnt' vent my tank properly and caused codes. It actually caused the stations' fuel fill pump to "click off" and I couldn't even fill my tank past a 1/4 full. This will also cause an "evap emissions leak" code to pop up. You can either replace a bunch of evap systems crap and spend a bunch of money... or you can just route a bypass vent to the gas cap and you're good to go :)

($25 bucks in fittings and 5/8 hose... I wouldn't bother until it impedes your fuel tank filling though as it is a bit of work to get the vent hose installed at the top of the tank)
