need help please

I have a 1999 explorer with a auto transmission. The gear shifter has broke/come loose. I tried to take the car out of park and put it into gear, but the shifter just drops to 1st without the transmisson changing gears with it. Any ideas?

the gear shift controls the trans with a cable, the cable could have come loose or broke,or the bracket it is mounted to may be loose. It is located at the base of the column,and is retained by a clip.Removing the lower dash panels,plastic and the metal one behind it) under the steering column,you should be able to see it.

ok ive broke the shaft that runs down column goin to try any fix it this week end
