I have a 2002 4x4 explorer, there is a grinding noise in the front end when turning to the left and right. the upper ball joint boots are torn, so not sure if that is the problem. Power steering is fine and the wheel bearings were replaced recently. Not sure whats wrong and dont want to just throw parts and wish for the best. Thank You.

Only way to diagnose is lifting the wheels off the ground and inspecting. GL

If the balljoint boots are torn, they need to be replaced. I have the same grinding problem with my 05. I also hear a dull thud when hitting light bumps. I lifted it the other day and all was tight. My 99 had balljoints that were dry and would stick. When hitting those small bumps they would pop out of place. I think I am having the same problem.

As a previous post said, you will have to lift the front to be sure.
