96' Ford Explorer XLT
Hey ya'll,

I'm looking into swapping a 302 into my 96'.. But I will not be doing that until summertime.
Right now I have a 4.0, 4r55e auto tranny, and Borg warner T-case (4405-4404-..i dont know what t-case it is...whatever is stock)

Here is my delima.. Im pretty sure that my t-case is toasted (defaintly needs some work done to it) and I dont want to put the money into this t-case since I will be swapping a 302 and a new tranny and tcase over this coming summer!
What T-case can I buy Right now that can be fitted to my 4r55e tranny, that can also be used with the 302 and whatever tranny I select to bolt to it?
What are my options on an auto tranny to bolt to the 302?

Some of my questions might not be clear so ask me to clarify my questions if they dont,

Thanks,
kendal

For an auto tranny with the 5.0, you are going to want a 4R70W or possibly a built AOD.

There is no transfercase that will work with the V6 family and the V8 family of trannies together. You can swap in a manual shift BW 1354 and then when you do the V8 swap, put the Advance Adapters kit on to keep the 1354. The kit costs around 400 bucks if I remember correctly.

Rebuild your tcase, keep using it, and do what Jason said. When you do get your 302 and 4R70W, change the output shaft in the tranny to match the AA Adapter. That way you can still use your current tcase. It'll save you some money and be a decent transfer case for your swap. Basically, just do what Stadx2 did.

I don't have much confidence in the 4405. Many shops won't rebuild it because it's not a conventional design. Ford will not either. They claim it must be replaced. Also, it's pretty weak and I don't think it can hold up to the torque of a 5.0. Probably why Ford made the 4404 to go with the 5.0 explorers instead of the 4405.

I am wanting to get rid of this T-case though. I haven't heard to much good stuff about it and, it grenaded on me while I wasnt even doing anything hard!
The chain has been slipping on it on every trail run that I've gone on...(Since the lift)

I'd rather not have a chain driven tcase... I would like to have a Manual t-case... I loved my old Dana300 on my CJ.

I'll keep on looking around for what to do though.
Is the 4r70w the stock 5.0 tranny in explorers?

Thanks,
Kendal

Yup. And I have one for sale! :D

...

What kind of shape is it in...and how much are you looking to get for it?

Thanks,
Kendal

It has 135k on it... but it ran flawlessly when I took it out. I'm lookin to get $300 for it. I'm in no hurry to sell it.. so if you're waiting until summer or whatever.. i'll probably still have it.

Section525... I might be interested in that tranny you have. The only thing that I am worried about is the 135K miles on it.

Can you tell me about the tranny? How long have you had it, what did it come out of..

What t-cases can be bolted to it?

Thanks,
Kendal

Kendal.. it came out of my Explorer. I've had it since 26k. It was from a 2WD so the tcase housing will need to be added. But any tcase that fits AOD or AOD-E trannies will work.

...

section... Let me do a little more research and make sure that this is the swap that I want to do. I am defaintly interested in your tranny though. You have any pictures of it? and, can you get me a shipping estimate to 72701?

I might go ahead and buy it before summer rolls around.

Thanks,
Kendal

Kendal.. I can get you pics of it sometime this week. It's still attached to my motor and in the chassis.

Here is the tail housing you'd need to mount an F150 t case to it. Dead Link Removed

I'm not sure on shipping. One eBay auction said $110. My zip is 95926 if you want to look into it. I have no idea how much a tranny weighs though...

Hey,
Alrite..I am calling a truck line tommorow to get a quote on a set of axles, I'll ask about the tranny at the same time.

Do you know of a good website that talks about the different t-cases that can be bolted to the 4r70w? I want to swap in a stronger tranny. Mine might just need some work done to it, but it is obviously built for a V6 with stock sized tires. Id like to find a t-case with a lower low range. I would prefer a manual tranny, but I dont want to butch my center console. You know of anyone thats swapped in a manual t-case and modified the linkages to come out of the side of the tranny hump?

I read on your website that a future mod of yours, youd like to get the superlift 4"? I am going to be selling mine around mid-Mayish. SAS!!
Would you be interested in a partial trade with your tranny and my superlift 4"?

Kendal

Ray Lobato has that type of setup on his '97 with an Atlas II.

Kendal.. Yeah I might be interested in a trade. How much are you lookin to get for it? I'm not planning on doing my lift until financial aid rolls in (around august). But if I can get a deal on it.. I could have it sit in my garage for a few months. :D Let me know.. :D
