My engine swap from a '99 SOHC to a '00 302 is almost complete.......but i need some help!! The shop that's doing it (friend's of mine) have ran into a problem w/ the t-case's.

On the 4.0 T-case there are wires coming out leading to a socket. There is a plug coming from the dash area which goes into the socket on the t-case. I think this is for the 4x4 switch.

The problem is there are no electronics on the 5.0 T-case at all! I don't know if the has been removed (engine/ecu/tranny/t-case were from wrecking yard) or there just isn't any. It doesn't look like there are any places for electronics to go, and NOTHING else has been removed from the engine i got.

Does the 5.0 have electronic 4x4 shift like the SOHC??

PLEASE HELP!........i thought about using the old t-case and driveline with the 4R70W tranny....can this be done????
I can't just ditch the t-case as the computer would probably go crazy!

I would really, really appreciate any info. and if possible some pics of a 5.0 T-case. I don't have a digital cam. but i'll try to get some pics up.
Once again, I really need some help on this one!

No wires at all on the 98+ 5.0 transfer case. It all works mechanically.

You are aware the v8's are all whell drive all the time with no low range right?

I don't think that the V8 are all wheel drive as some members have 2 wheels drive V8's, such as james t.

But if this is true then what can i do?

Can i use my old t-case and 4r70w tranny?
Or should i drop the t-case and make it into 2wd? (don't know how the computer would react)

What do u plan to do with the truck? Street performance? Rockcrawling? That and $$$ will dictate what transfer case to go with.

I plan to use the truck as a dialy driver and for street performance. But i still don't know what to do, or even if the old t-case bolts up to the new tranny.

If it's driven primarily on the street, just bolt the AWD case up to the tranny. It will be perfect for you.

if you wanted to use your old tcase.. i think you can. stadx2 replaced the awd case with a control trac case in order to have the 4lo on his v8. he could probably give you info on the wiring and stuff. i don't recall if he said it bolted right up.
but for streeting.. i'd just stick with the awd.

I should have been more clear. You can get the v8's with 2wd only or full time all wheel drive.

If I can just put inthe 5.0 t-case and be AWD then that's great!

Do you guys think the computer will cause problems?.....That is my main concern
Is there any way to dissconnect the old 4WD system so i don't have light's flashing on the dash all the time?......i guess i could just take the bulbs out
other then that it would be nice to have AWD.

Mbrooks420- i did a little research, i got now 2WD or AWD only.

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

There are two things you could do. Leave the 4404 AWD explorer V8 t-case and have AWD. Just leave the wires disconnected. The other option would be to get the AA adaptor to fit the 4405 4.0L t-case to your 4R70W. This is a ~$500 adaptor, as the extension housing and output shaft need to be changed.

I have the AWD case in my ranger and have it disconnected. THhe lights flash every 10 minutes or so, but I ignor them. Maybe one day I will remove the bulbs. You could root out the 4wd controller if you prefer. The 4x4 is not integral to the "computer" or EEC. It has its own control module.

Other options would be 2wd 4R70W, and Expedition t-case, or an Atlas t-case. All with their own issues.

That's great, thanks alot!
I i'm going to keep the 5.0 t-case and have it AWD......i kind of wanted that anyway.
I'll probably just take out the bulbs from the dash.

One more thing, if i take out the front driveshaft, do i get 100% power to the rear wheels?

Thanks for the help everyone!

I have 14K miles on my swap and never put in the front drive shaft. I still have not decided what to do in the t-case area, so I have just been RWD. 100% of power goes to the rear. I do have an issue of tranny fluid blowing out the vent tube on the t-case though. This is very slow however, less than a quart in 12K miles (when i checked and added).
