99 Mountaineer Needs help with 3" lift

I am new to this whole thing. I am looking to put a 3 inch body lift and some bigger tires and wheels on my Mountaineer. What body lifts could I use and what size tires and wheels could I get when I put that on? I need all the help I can get I am so confused. I heard of a Torsion bar Twist and rear shackles....how much lift is that and what does it effect if I do that?

Mountaineer

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of information on this site that will answer your questions. I do not know what a mountaineer is because we dont have them here, but have seen it mentioned on this site many a times.

You the search feature above and try "body lift" should result in a few hundred answers.. The best solution is really just sit back and read heaps of posts for several days and then you will get a really good ideal if you still want to start down the road of modifications
There is no end of the road :-) just MORE MODIFICATIONS to do!!

But if your really looking for a place to get a lift kit.. www.summitracing.com is one of the many locations that parts are sourced from. Hope this helps.

I can't find any lift kits that are Mountaineer Specific any explore ones that will work?

Any lifts made for a 95-00 Explorer will work on your truck.

if you are looking to do a body lift i think you have to go with a ranger BL...at least thats what ive hear from reading threads here. look through past threads in this section and you'll find out

Well kind of confused some say explorer and some same ranger which is for sure?

have you tried searching because i know there is a multitude of people that have body lifts on their 2nd gen. X's and im sure they will have a part number and everything

yeah I have tried searching no one has listed anything with a part number or anything. The only thing I have seen mentioned is a torsion twist and then shackles in the rear but I am hoping to find a complete kit. Adjusting my torsion bar is not something I want to do because I heard if you do it too much or wrong it can screw things up. Looking for a 3" body lift for a 99 Mountaineer. I have seen a bunch lowered but none lifted please anyone?

Use the Performance Accessories PA-883 kit (98+ Ranger).

Thanks guys I really appreciate all the help and ideas for a rookie like me. Now any of you wrenches out there want to help install the SOB. Haha just kidding thanks for the help....if I need more I am sure I will post

Can You Lift A Awd Mountaineer 2000 ? I Have Been Told No But I Just Dont Believe Them .ps Nice Lookin Ex . Any Info You Can Share W/ Me Would B Appreciated.

Yes, you can lift aN AWD Mountaineer. You can use any lift a 4WD Mountaineer/Explorer would use.

If I do a torsion twist plus a 3 inch body lift what is going to happen when I tweak my torsion bar up....does the ride get worse? Does it weaken the torsion bar by having more pressure on it?

Your torsion bars will implode in a matter of miles.

i thought it was feet

Torsion Bars

Torsion Twist,,

Your front end travel stays the same befor and after a torsion twist, with one major difference. Lets say stock you have 8 inches of travel ( i dont know the actual but it must be around there somewhere) and the ride height is halfway between the upper and lower reaches, you would have say 4 inches of upwards travel, and 4 inches of downward travel. So you go off road and the front tyre can travel down 4 inches into holes etc to keep contact with the ground.

OK so now you do a 2 inch torsion twist, ( free, just crawl under truck and crank away) that raises the front end. That means you still have 8 inches of travel BUT you just used up 2 inches of the downward travel, so now you got 2 inches of downward travel and 6 inches of upwards travel. So now you go off road again and your front tyre can only drop 2 inches into holes to keep traction. The softness of the ride just changed from rough as a truck to rougher tahn you would ever want to tolerate. BUT ITS 2 inches higher. ( only in the front ) And now that your torsion bars are pretty much stressed out when you hit a bump the tyre trys to travel upwards but there is so much pressure that its really rough, BUT it could travel in theory 6 inches as the top STOP is 6 inches away. If the suspension hits something really hard and it actually travels the full 6 inches and hits to top STOP the pressure on the torsion bar will be very near breaking point, and it will break sooner or later.

OK For street if you like it that way, makes more room for bigger tyres, but not real good for off road use.

Get a body lift first and then decide if the more height is required. The tosrion twist can be done to look and try the ride quality and if you dont like it just put it back to where it was. remember to count the turns of the screw. Remember that if you want to keep it you must get a front end alignment done or your tyres will get trashed.

I will help you install your lift if you like, just bring your truck around or send me a Plane Ticket,,, :D

sounds like what chris said makes alot of sense. i see how it would affect off road use in that u dont have as much travel. only thing i dont like about a body lift si that u still dont obtain ground clearance except from the tires. chris how much with the new tires was your undercarriage raised?

Chris thats a big help but what do you do in the back end to even it out....I heard warrior shackles or add a leaf.....do you have to do both or do can you do one or the other? Your really helping me out. I have it narrowed down to what I am going to do. I will have to post before and after pics in a couple weeks when I get it done. I am going to put Yoko Geolanders and American Racing Chambers Wheels.....any thoughts on the tires and rims???
