ok- not my explorer but my 92 ranger wih auto locking hubs. when you put it in 4x4 it makes a loud clicking noise.. and it sounds very bad. also does not disengage right away anymore and makes bad sounds around corners in 4x4.....

are my hubs just about had it an need new ones?? I have heard form several people they wear out? or can there be something else wrong?

Probably definitely the hubs, new automatic ones from ford are like $500 a set and manual ones can be had for like $150. I have Procomp manuals which are actually made by milemarker. They were $120 plus $30 for a spindle nut conversion kit I think is what it was called. Can be done in an hour if you have the tools, or your mechanic can do it and service your front brakes at the same time to save some labor. I prefer manuals because they're more reliable and they work in reverse where auto ones don't.

ok.... 4x4 isnt supposed to be used while doing lots of turns... it will never sound good with perfect equipment at any time...... anyways, your noise sounds like blown auto hubs...just get some manuals and dont use the 4x4 on any pavement... [this could be what blew your hubs in the first place]
