i have a 1996 explorer with a seriouos water issue. There is coolant leaking out of the back of the motor. The view is restricted and I cannot see exactly where it is coming from. It runs out about as fast as you put it in. I am assuming it is a head gasket as I cannot think of any hoses or anything with the cooling system running back there. I am thinking that the cost to replace the head gasket would be in the $1500 to $2000 range and not worth even fixing. Any ideas on what it could be? Also there is not any noticable water in the oil

Generally the head gasket would leak INSIDE the engine. I would think its a coolant line in the back of the motor or the intake gasket. What motor do you have?

its the 4.0 liter

Freeze plug? cracked block?

my guess would be a freeze plug/expansion plug.
