thanks, from the pic would the "pipe" be number 5? mine is after 96

how could it all go bad what code did it pull? probably just a sensor or the egr itself

More than likely thats the one. It usually goes before the other. If you can try to see which one is leaking air before you replace it.

9 out of 10 times the tube is ok. The egr valve and the sensor are probably what your looking at replacing. On the other hand if your exhaust header is pretty rusted, then theres a posssibility the egr tube is to. So that would need replaced.

i'm getting codes p0401,p1309,p0171,p0174 is what came up from autozone, above where i quted is from the dealer on the sheet they gave me. i had changed the sensor 2 years ago, where it was burnt through. so for a parts list get 1. new sensor 2 egr valve . 3 ? egr pipe

If you can get the pipe out in one piece, assuming there are no holes in it, it can be cleaned out and saved.

im betting on the sensor

p0401-Insufficient EGR Flow. ,
p1309-Misfire Detection Monitor not enabled. ,
p0171-System Too Lean - Bank No. 1. ,
p0174 - System Too Lean - Bank No. 2.

There is an easy test...take off the rubber hoses off the sensor that go to the pipe. Take a tire inflator with a matresss attachment (cone shape) and blow it into both pipes. If it is clear there is nothing wrong with the pipe. I had once case where that tube would hold pressure!

If you have a vac pump take off the egr vac nipple, and pull 10 hg of vac at idle. If the car tries to stall the valve is good!

Now you are pretty sure the sensor is bad! The other unlikely thing is the solenoid.

Well, My 1996 5.0L pulls that same code po401. I don't have egr tubes on this model and year X, so Im think the valve/sensor is bad.

is there an online post somewhere of changing the egr and tube on the v6
