I am trying to replace a starter on my 1999 Explorer Sport 4x4. I am unable to get to the top bolt to loosen. Anyone have any tips on how to get the bolt off.

Unable because you can't get to it or unable because you just can't break it loose? I just did this job this morning. The bottom bolt came right off, the top almost felt like it was welded on. The clearance sucks, so I had to use 1/4" drive ratchet with a short socket, and I held it in place with one hand and wiggled my arm around with a small hammer and just tapped the ratchet until it broke free. From there it came right out.

It's a PITA, I wound up having to cut a box end wrench down to fit in there and then using a hammer to break it free, after that I used a socket and extension to pull it out.

I had no trouble with the bottom bolt but I cannot break the top one loose because of the clearance. I will try to use a hammer and tap on the rachet liked you suggested. How did you loosen the wire nuts for the electrical connection? I could not get a enough clearance with a box end wrench.

After I removed the bolts, I had some wiggle room with the starter and then
I was able to remove the wire nuts. I had to use a long skinny screw driver to pop off that plastic protection cover.

Such a simple job made difficult bc of clearance. I used pb blaster the day before just in case. I also had to cut a wrench to fit in the to break it loose. then I used a stubby ratchet to get it completely off.. the wire cable was relatively easy. good luck. be patient

I'm running into this same issue. I have it out about 1/8" and it still feels like it is fighting me to the end. I can't really get in there as well. Did you remove the drive shaft? if not, did you attack it from underneath?
