My wife has a 2004 Mercury Sable wagon. Recently, the steering wheel started making a small rattle when turning the wheel. It sounds like a screw dropping inside a small enclosed plastic area for a very short period of time. It happens with left or right turns, winding or unwinding the wheel, fast or slow. Bumps don't seem to make it happen.
I took it to the local LM dealer and they said it was the clock spring and would cost about $350 to replace. I'm not convinced.
Before I spend that kind of money and it not fixing the problem, I'd like your opinion. Can a bad clock spring sound like a screw rattle? I think it's a loose screw inside one of those little black compartments that are behind the cruise control paddles. Is that possible?
TIA,
Chris
