1994 Ford Ranger 4x4
I am new to the forum and have read some very helpful post here @ Serious Eplor. I thank u all for the helpful hints and tips. Now I need some one on one of my own. I have a 1994 Ford Ranger xlt 4x4 Excab 4.0L 5 speed manual M50D with I think a BW 1354 electric T-Case (290000 miles). I bought the truck used about a year ago waiting for my son to turn 16 and he turns 16 in Oct. and this happens.
I’m having a problem with reverse and 3rd and I don’t know if they are related or 2 separate problems. The reverse problem is when I back up and then press the clutch something will bind up and the truck will stop like u would throw a wrench in the middle of my gears in the transmission. I have taken it to an old shade tree Mechanic he said it was the rear end with a lot of slack in it and I need to change it. It is hard for me to believe that. So I took it home and I opened it up, there is slack but the gears looked good. I did find some metal in the bottom of the housing. Looked like a peace of the shim. But I did not think it was the rear end (thinking T-case or Transmission).
So I tried a few things. As soon as I would press the clutch in I would take it out of reverse, it would not stop the truck, if I left it in reverse the truck would stop as soon as I pressed the clutch. So to try to eliminate the rear end I took the rear drive shaft off and used the front axle only. It would do the same thing with just the front axle pulling. This is all being done in a straight line, just forward and reverses no turning.
Now 3rd gear will not come out of gear with normal driving. I have to stop the truck to get it out of 3rd or pull it hard to get out. I did not try again after taken back drive shaft off. My sync in 1st gear is out I have to hold it in gear, but it has been like that since I got the truck. But I think that is a separate issue. I don’t know if it would be in the transmission or t-case.
I have changed the clutch and all clutch components (I was having trouble with the clutch master cylinder).
I’m just trying to get a 16 year old boy and his mom off my rear end. Without having to sell the other kids to get the truck fixed. If anyone can get me going in the right direction, what to look for.
