looking to buy
I am looking to a an Explorer and I have about $8,000 or so to spend. What should I look for? Are some years better than other?

Will be doing some mild off roading, trail rides, and then daily driver for me also. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Well you found the right site for the info your looking for. With 8K and being in ID your sittin on a pretty good deal. We need to know what you want an explorer for though. Off-roading, street, or just a grocery getter.

I'll start with the 91-94 explorers. These are great years for wheelin. The 4.0L is strong and the trannys aren't bad either. The Dana 35 front axles are the weak point in the set-up. Thats if you run like a 35" tire or bigger. The ford 8.8" rear end is as good as a 9" in my opinion. I've never had a single problem with mine. All in all I'm glad I bought a first generation Explorer.

I don't know much about the other years cause I don't have one but someone will reply soon with info on the other years. Welcome to the site!!!:)

you need to start narrowing it down....
-which body style? 91-94 or 95+
-offroading? Towing? Street scene?
From there you can start to workout the details of the exact Explorer you want.

Mild off road, and daily driver. Either body style is fine.

Thanks

Which body style do you like better? You can make a mild offroader out of a 95+ fairly cheap.

Mild off road and daily driver, huh?

Well take a look at mine. 92' Explorer XL 4 door with manual everything. IMO there the best for all around.
Even though I like the 95+ body style but I'll take the Dana 35 over a true IFS any day. It kinda comes down to you and your taste. I built mine so I can go out and do some narly trails around here but drive it to work every day of the week. Some times it breaks and sometimes it don't but thats what comes with wheelin'.
