I need help. I just got a 91 explorer and I am looking for instructions on how to remove the trim and factory head unit. I heard I need to make 4 - 1/8 inch wires to remove the factory head unit from truck, but I don't even know where to start on the instrument console to remove all the trim to get to the head unit.
Does anyone have a web site or know where I can get this info. I don't a have Chiltons or Haynes manual yet.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Karl, does your factory radio have 4 small holes...2 on the left side of the radio and 2 on the right? If so, try going to a auto parts store that sells audio accessories and look for a Ford Factory Radio Removal kit. It should be 4 rings with straigt ends (kinda like a sardine can opener). All you do is put 1 ring in each hole, take 2 fingers from each hand and place them through the rings. Then you want to pull the rings sideways(this presses the locks close to the radio) Last step is to pull the radio straight out. If you don't get it the first time, keep trying until you get it. Hope this helps.

I also have a 91" Ford Explorer and what i did was take it to the dealer and he took it out free of charge!!! Now they have the pullers at wal-mart in the car audio section...

Hope this helps

One more thing...... to remove the dash face there are 2 screws to the left and to the right of the ash tray..you may need to take out the ashtray. then the rest you just pull and they come undone....you many need to put your shifter all the way down to "1".

In addition to the above info, when EMStaxi says pull sideways, it means that you're sort of moving the keys on both sides similar to if you were trying to pry open elevator doors, outwards. The removal keys are similar to a clothes hangar wire. You could try that if it's stiff enough.

Before doing that, you're removing the two screws on the side of the ashtray and then you can let it hang. When you're ready to begin taking the dash off, I find it easiest to start from the bottom left and go in a counter clockwise motion and gently pull. If you have an automatic with the 4x4 option, don't forget to disconnect that wire cluster before totally taking off the dash!
