I have a 2003 XLT with 3rd row seats and rear temp controls (on the left side).

I currently have a JL 6W3v3 installed in the factory sub box. I am looking to add more bass to the system and need some ideas. I use my rear seats so I need a the sub to stay in the factory location.

Anyone have any luck building there own custom box for the factory location? Whats the largest sub I could fit with my own box. Other idea is to find a way to bring bass up front but I am not sure how to go about either. Any input would be nice.

if you want bass up front you MUST upgrade the front speakers...a lot of sound dampening.

high end components with a solid mid woofer that has a decent amount of throw and an 150 watt x 2 amp will bring that bass up front.

there is only so much a 6" subwoofer can do.

There is no replacement for displacement

I agree a 6.5 inch is really kind of small, which is why I would need a bigger sub in the back.

Do you have a 3rd Gen, mine sub was an 8"?
Stock HU?
I have a 3rd gen '04 with an Audiophile with 8" Sub, I added an Amp and 10", sounds great. In some testing all door speakers seem to cut off at about 200hz and everything below that goes to the sub. I still finishing up a 10" install in the stock box.

I am running 4 year old kickers coax for the doors and thats run off a small 35rm x 4 alpine amp. HU isn a Eclpise CD5030 (just got it a few days ago). I had replaced the blown factory sub with the small 6.5 from JL (got it for free).

Its better then no sub, since at least I have the lower end sound.

Okay, I looked at my amp settings. The 4 channel has HPF on. I had turned it on because of the rattle of the speakers trying to play those base notes. Not sure I want to dynamat the whole door or not. Can I just improve the area around the speakers? I have seen some people just put a little around the hole the speaker is in.

I may just build my own box and try and cram a 10" in the back. Not sure I could get anything larger to work. I think I will have to dynamat that area as well.

I had played around with the idea of switching to better fronts but perhaps the matting would be a better choice, and a step I would have to take at some point anyway.

Here is what I decided to do. I went and talked with the local place that does custom installs. (they do some really nice work). What I am going to do is go with the JL 12w3 and get a ported box built to fit behind the 3rd row seats.

The 6.5 has the good and tight mid bass. At some point later down the line she may come back into play for the purpose of full filling mid bass. Has anyone does this between the arm rest and the center console? I have seen it done with a 10" in an f150, but thats an f150.

cramming a 10 in an enclosure too small is going to sound like crap. You would get fuller lower bass with a single 8 in a nicely designed ported enclosure.

I have decided not to put anything in the factory location.

I will take some pictures of the new sub and box. Idea is when I want to use my 3rd row I bush it to the back and it fits back there. Normal use is just behind the 2nd row. They did a wonderful job with it. I don't have the skill (or tools) to build a properly built ported box. All I really need to do is get a better amp now.
