One night about a year ago, I was driving home and I tried to stop for a stop sign, i head a loud SNAP and my car just glided foward, brake pedal to the metal. So I had my pads and rotots done to the tune of $500, and they said that I would probably need new calipers, because mine were pretty shot-up. They said that I could drive it how it was since I didn't want to pay $200 ea to replace the calipers. Ever since I had them "fixed" the front brakes always squeal. I am planning on going on a roadtrip and I want to be sure I have sound brakes, and, since I do not trust the shop I used to goto, I want to do them myself. So my question is How hard is it to replace the calipers? I saw them for like $37 on fordpartsnetwork. What tools whould I need? I want to start making my own repairs, and I have replaced a tstat, serpentine belt and radiator hoses and I just want to know how involved the brakes are.

the squeeling is probrally from lack of grease. on the slide pins. i would check the calipers as they may be fine and the shop wanted to rip you off

you can get calipers for $12 (reman) or $25 new from autozone. but all you need to do is unbolt the caliper and the brake line put the new one on and bleed the brakes

For something so cheap, I would just replace them just to make sure. Oh make sure not to go back in that shop again- $200 to replace the caliper!?! Thieves, I tell ya!
