I want to replace the rear shaft u-joints in my truck. Do I just need to replace the u-joint? Is there other parts I need to change as well? I see that there are small clamps for u-joints on some part websites. Do I need those also? Can anyone recommend a greaseable u-joint for our trucks? I never had to change these things before, first time for me.

You just need the joints. Rarely would anyone need the cap straps, only after a major joint failure.
Good joints: Spicer first, Precision second, .....

Keep in mind that if you install greasable U-joints-
When installed properly the grease fitting hole would be installed in such a way that as the driveshaft rotates to drive the vehicle in a forward motion, it would be getting pressed closed and not ripped open by the tourqe.

Thanks guys. I'm going to order napa part# PUJ 354. The Ford manual says that if Im going to reuse the bolts then I need to reinstall with threadlock and sealer. Is that loctite and teflon tape?

If you use loctite, use the blue (permatex) or you might regret it later. Only use a drop of it. Forget the teflon tape.

X 2. Use red and you'll be sorry next time you have to remove the bolts!

Thanks, looks like the permatex red seals and locks, so I'll use a drop of that. Looks like I'll be having fun next weekend.

NAY NAY NAY!!
BLUE loctite, red will seize those bolts in there tighter than a dolphins azz. You will need to use heat and say a ton of prayers next time if you use red

Better:nono::nono: or you're :crazy: and this will be you next time!:fire:

ok, blue loctite it will be then. thanks for the heads up.

I'm trying hard to understand the statement, but can't.
the grease fitting hole should face forwards or backwards?
the hole/fitting gets pressed closed or rips open depending on which way the fitting faces?

Ok, when the driveshaft is spinning in the correct rotation to power the truck forward..
The tourqe will be pushing in one direction, the hole for the grease fitting should face in a direction that, if the hole were to fail, the tourqe would close up the hole and not open it. So it depends which u-joint we are talking about and which direction the driveshaft turns.

I got this done today. I ended up screwing up one of the ujoints bearings but I managed to change the one that was bad but what a pain that crap was. Took me about 3 hours to do but at least I know how to do it now so next time won't be as bad. Thanks for the help guys.
