I'm considering buying a 98 Mountaineer, 5.0, AWD, AT. I haven't seen it yet, but the pictures look promising. I'm planning on looking at it tomorrow. I'd appreciate any and all thoughts on what I should be on the lookout for on this year/model. Also, is there anyway (without) jacking it up to verify the AWD is working properly? thanks

I had same year, motor AWD and I loved it. Couple of things that come to mind, Check the CV shafts and listen for exhaust tick. The EGR tube and the pass side header have been known to split.

Wellllll, when I tested Snowball's 4x4, I headed to a dirt road and floored it. Dirt burnout lasted about 1 second before the AdvanceTrac kicked in. I haven't driven the AWD before, but maybe it would be similar? If all of them grab, I think you would know it...

If it comes too it...do a 4406 swap!!! :D...I still have to do mine....:(....Seriously though AWD is fine for simple 4x4 just the serious stuff..is sorta hard....
