ok well i own a 94 explorer.

and im thinking about having a lil bit more than 2000 pounds inside the car..

could the car handle it?

and if not what can i do to it so it will handle it?

any help is usefull.

take your GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating)5280 - Curb weight (that's your weight w/o gear, gas, passengers)4300 and see what is left. They give you about 1,000 lbs to load up.

2000lbs inside the vehicle is pushing it. What are you planning on hauling in there? The offensive line of the Dolphins?
 






LOL no its car audio related and theres alot of batteries and wood and equipment going in.

but if it cant take it what can i do so it will?
 






well GVWR is the total amount of weight your vehicle can carry. I've nearly filled the rear of an Explorer with cases of chemicals. 12, 32oz bottles per case, about 60 cases. That weighed around 1200 lbs. It was definitely weighed down a bit plus my buddy and I in the truck so we would have been "over" weight had I been stopped or caused an accident.

In all reality though I don't know what all you could fit in there that would get your truck beyond a reasonable weight. Wood is light, batteries weigh approx 50 lbs (if you have 10, thats 500lbs) subwoofers and amps can be heavy but I don't think there would be any reason it would be unsafe or over weight.


Now if you do go that balls out I'd do some searching on here, I believe guys have shattered their rear windows due to extreme bass.

my batts weigh 69 pounds a peice and my subs weigh 60 pounds a pieace and i have 4 of them (they are 21 inches ) ok the wood weighs alot im gonna be using aLOT of sheets of mdf. oh yeah and my amps weigh 18 pounds each. i have 12 of them. i already have a wall in my car that i have to knock down and im building a new one...but i know that wood is gonna weigh a **** load.so yeah would anyone know if i would need to modify something in order to drive with that weight?
 






all i could think to tell ya is that even if you did do somthing to your car's suspension to handle the weight you would still be over weight. so if you were to cause an accident lets say because you could't stop in time you would be fine for being over weight but im not sure of the laws in floida either. just a thought
 






Wouldn't adding a leaf spring bring it up a few hundred pounds?
 






Adding overload leaf-springs to the rear suspension might gain you between 200-450 pounds of additional payload but the A4LD transmission will be pushed to it's limits with what you have planned, especially if it's never been freshened up or rebuilt recently, leading to the death of your transmission.

wow my transmission is already failing as it is sometime. like ill leave a spot sign and it will get stuck for a long time then it will eventually go. well new tranny and leaf springs im guessing
 






What about using a trailer. Tow capacity will always exceed carry capacity. Your x should be able to tow 3500 lbs (trailer weight plus load weight) and if you beef up the suspension your could probably tow 5000 lbs. Even if your tranny is weak you should still be able to tow 3500 lbs without doing any more damage than driving.

Just a thought.

payload you need (ie a moving truck)

LOL, no way you're going to have anywhere near a TON of car audio equipment in your truck. Unless you're getting car audio advice and a budget from XzBit or something. That's just ridiculous. You gonna put some 22"s on it and chrome it out too? Maybe a 32" LCD under the oil pan? :rolleyes:

Anyways, I've had over 1,200 lbs. in my truck driving from GA to NY and it handled it perfectly. Just don't tailgate as you're not going to stop very fast. Otherwise the 4.0 didn't seem to notice much.

those subs are 35 pounds each...and the subs im getting now are 21" and 60 pounds. and im getting 4 of them.

them im gonna need about 12-15 sheets of MDF (wood to build) and each sheet is REALLY heavy i mean the home depot ppl need 2 ppl to carry one sheet.

then 7 batts which weigh 69 pounds each.

and finally 12 amplifiers that weigh 19 pounds each.
its alot im gonna give it a shot and see how the car holds up with it.

..... Why..??! LOL.. Well all that still only came up to 951 lbs. So you're gonna have another 1,000 lbs. of just wood in there? Can you not use another (lighter) type of material/wood? I thought that's what H2s and Escalades were for..? lol.. sorry.

If there's going to be that much weight in there though, I'd definitely beef up the suspension on it with some better/more leaf springs at least. It's definitely going to sag a bit.

EDIT: Oh, and yeah, the a4LD is not going to like that payload very much either. After all, A4LD = Automatic 4-Speed Light Duty. But if you don't mind re-building every 30-50k miles, it's all good, heh.

im not worried about sag too much im just worried about my engine giving out froim too much weight.

Nah, the 4.0 wouldn't have much of a prob with the added weight. You just have to worry about the tranny dealing with the added stress. If your tranny is already slipping on you, this is probably going to to be the "straw" (more like anvil) that'll break the camels back. Definitely try to re-build or replace it soon. Then I wouldn't expect it to last over 40-50k at most until it dies again pulling around that weight, less if you're driving on hills a lot. Yeah, leaf springs should keep the sag in check and help with bouncing/handling.

this car isnt that bad i mean it has 130k in miles but its a 94 so i think that would be considered undermiled wouldnt it?

Nah, that's not that bad. My '94 has over 200k on the original drive-train and it still runs perfect. But I got it 9 years ago with 130k on it and I very rarely haul anything or have a significant load on it. This truck has been the epidomy of reliability for me since I've had it. I also keep up with maintenance too which I'm sure is why. As long as you do the same, you'll be alright. I'd change fluids a little more often considering the constant load you're going to have on everything. Like change tranny fluid every 10-15k miles or so at least.
