exactly. when you convert to manual hubs, the only thing that changes, is now you have to get out and lock the hubs. it seems like the wrong idea, but the manual hubs are much stronger than the auto ones. so when you want to go 4wd, stop, lock your hubs, and then drive to wherever you wanna wheel it. then push the button, and you have 4wd!

man thanks a lot that had me really concerned i didnt wanna get in the middle of it and find out somthing different

No problem man. just make sure you lock the hubs BEFORE you engage 4WD and you'll be fine. and good choice too. the auto hubs are pieces of poo......

Which is pretty much what you should with automatic hubs, too. I made the mistake of engaging the 4WD at speed (60MPH) a few times and chewed up the inside of the hub cap. The proper procedure is to stop or slow with no force on the hubs once engaged. Neutral is good in either case. Engage the 4WD or 4WL (foot on brake for this one) at the switches, and when you engage the drive again, the splines and cams line up correctly. Putting on the manual hub removes the matched cams of the autohubs, but the splined shaft shifts out into the hub in either case. Forward motion engages the automatic, as it "rolls" the half axles out from the pumpkin, and reverse pulls them back in, when the 4WD is turned off.

This is all just IIRC. But it makes sense, having had the front pumpkin and half shafts out during my Front End Rebuild

Another advantage to the manual hubs is that you can now run 2wd low range just in case you need it..

ive got new catalytic converter and muffler ordered. but i still need to be able to drive the explorer for a day or two. does the oxygen senser play a big role? if so how can i bypass it and use the vehicle with out the catalytic converter i know it sounds bad but its the only vehicle at the time and i haft to be at work cause we know how uncle sam gets when you work for him. thanks

Okay, I'm lost. When did you say anything about the exhaust being an issue?

If the old exhaust is still on, and you've just ordered new, why couldn't you continue driving? The O2 sensor effects the CatCon indirectly, by telling the ECU how to modify the fuel component of the intake. The O2 sensor lets the ECU know how well it is managing the fuel/air mixture.
