I've had my Explorer about a year and a few days ago it started making a ticking sound when I accelerate only. If it's idling you cant hear it, it's only when it's in gear and I got my foot on the gas. As soon as I take my foot off it stops, it gets quicker the faster I go. Also I started it up the other night to check the plug wires and it made a very loud humming sound and then bogged down and died. It took 3 tries for me to start it back up and then it hasn't done it since. Sometimes it seems to have a rough idle. Any ideas?

I ended up changing out the plug wires last weekend and the ticking sound got a little lighter but now it's back to making the same sound. I'm stumped

have you checked your oil level? is it more of a tick or a rattle? does it seem to go away or not sound as loud as the engine warms up?

Yeah oils good. It sounds like an electrical ticking sound only on acceleration in gear. When it's in park you can't hear it. I got up to speed down a back road here and put it in neutral and stepped on the gas and you couldn't hear the ticking, put it back in gear and it started up again.

At first I imagined it as a noise coming from the motor. If it sounds electrical, hawaii's reply will most likely sort you out.
