ok fellas, over the next month, i'll be working on my mom's x. nothing major, but they annoy me.

1. Air box has a crack, i'll need to replace the lid, but have no clue how to disconnect the two hoses at top.

2. Gas gage is broken. Its not fluctuateing at all, which makes me think it is the gauge itself. When i owned a volvo with a broken sensor thingy (real technical i know) it bounced up and down the first 2/3 of a tank, but the top third was accurate. what do you all think. Also if i get another gauge cluster, how to I adjust the milage to match the current one?

3. right rear lock. It buzzes instead of locks/unlucks. the motor must be fine because it buzzes, what could be wrong with it?

4. rear window weather stripping. this is common i know, but i haven't found a fix for it. i tried rubber cement, no use. i tried 3m foam tape, no use. any suggestions?

5. Gurgling noise when going up hills, but shifts good on flat surfaces. Slight "burning rubber" smell happens intermitantly. Possible tranny trouble? I suggested a tranny flush at jifft lube. Its got 184,000 miles on it, so i guess were already on borrowed time. its not too bad now, but i'd like to prolong it as long as posible.

You sure you aren't describing the problems of a Dodge Caravan? 3 of the 5 problems I know happen to the Caravans...

#2 and 3 happened to my friend's caravan.. I can't remember how he said they fixed the door(I'll ask him in school tomorrow) but i remember the gas gauge thing had a recall... Maybe Ford has one too, check the webpage I'll try to get more info from him tomorrow

#5 happened to my dad's caravan, but not as bad as you are describing it...just the poor shifting uphill... I believe a fluid flush fixed that problem..

I'll tell you what he said about #2 and3 tomorrow

1.Just Use superglue.
2.You're gonna have to drop the tank for this one.
3.You'll need to replace the lock cylinder, not fun at all.
4.Not sure, replacement from Ford?
5.Gurgling noise may just be the heater core, mine does it sometimes

2. Don't assume it is the gauge. If the thingy (sending unit) is shot, the gauge will do nothing. I know nothing of specifically X sending units (need one of you smart guys here), but this common on other autos. As far as setting the mileage, it is illegel to "break the seal" on a speedometer. The best thing is to clearly document when the speedo was replaced.

3. A buzzing tells me that everything else is fine and the motor is locked or some sort of blockage is keeping the window from moving. It could be just weak voltage, but prob. motor locked. The buzzing indicates voltage is getting to motor, but something (internal in motor or stoppage of window) is keeping it from moving.

actually the X replaced my parents caravan... odly enough that was the most reliable car i seen till we got the x. It got upwards of 200,000 before we finally traded it in. By that time my dad had backed into so many utility poles that we kept the insurance card in the glove box!

Air box lid. I can't just glue it, the tabs are broken too. We have since changed mechanics

The buzzing is coming from the rear door lock, not the window. i'm guessing that its a broken gear or lever thingy. I was hoping someone could shed some light as to what to look for when i pop open the interior panel.

Thanks for all your help guys!:bounce:

sorry about that unabonked; I combined two of your points into one. it's not the biggest mistake I made today, and still have a couple of hours left.

What year is it.I have a airbox cover from a 92 in great shape.

When I opened the panel on my 95 and removed the lock cylinder, dirt had gotten by the dust boot and inside the unit it got between the plastic gears and caused them to lock and eventually break, thus making the motor spin free.

its a 94... should be the same box. i still need to know how to get the hoses off it without damaging them though. there are some at the bone yard near me but they are rusted at the hose input, so i may be interested.

Yeah thats sounds like it... how hard is it ro replace?

It was a pita.......I got it out but I bent the linkages so much I had to take it to Ford to get a new one installed, it was about 60 buck$ I think.
And it's still not quite right........
