Ok so heres the deal, my axle shaft seals were leaking on my front differential. I did some searching to see if it was a DIY with in my scope. i think it is but im at a road block. I have the drivers side shaft out, slipped right out. But how the heck do i get in there to get that seal out? its hidden way up in the screwed up explorer suspension stuff. i dont think a three jaw puller will fit.

the next problem is that i cant get the passenger side shaft to come out. Is the passenger side clipped in? the thing moves about a 1/8 of an inch and stops like there is a snap ring inside holding it.

I need some help as soon as i can get it, thanks all. If any one is in the oshkosh wisconsin area feel free to call me and help 608.617.2249 heck even if your not in the area and can answer my questions, feel free to call. ill be out there scratching my head trying to fix this mess.

Passenger side is held in with a c-clip. You can use a spring as a c-clip eliminator.. There was even a thread about it recently.. Someon found the right spring and was selling some for $6 each.. (I need to get a couple)..

To get the c-clip out you pull the pig out of the front (basically disassemble the TTB)..

As for removing the seals.. I havent' done it yet.. I've seen winter install one that he made from a broken one on R.J.'s rig on a truckhaven run. I don't remember them doing anything odd to get the old one out (the old was was in 2 pieces though).

what about a slide-hammer ? also i think they make a seal puller thats about a ft long at most auto part stores ...i know i've seen something to that affect.

You need a slide hammer or you could also try smashing the seal with a long screwdriver and hammer (slide hammer is better) The passenger side is held in by a c-clip, so you must remove the whole diff, like Maniak said. A seal installer with a long handle will be needed to put it back in.

If you need help reassembling everything, check out the ball joint tutorial in my sig.

Are you sure that the seals are leaking bad enough to warrant all that work? Is the vent tube blocked? (if it is it will force fluid out the seals, even good ones) Was the diff overfilled? (with water or goo if you drove through a lake)
