Yeah, well. I first bought a 96 4.0L V6 OHV 4X4 Control trac rig and it had an annoying 'engine buzz' that no one could find and seemed characteristic to that engine in other ones I tried. Ford dealer tested & said that was the way they were. Sold rig. The 4.0L V6 SOHC rigs I tried were smooth - ie no buzz. But, next bought a 97 5.0L V8 AWD and it is very smooth. Thats my take. But, I am very picky about vibrations, buzzes etc.

The 4.0 engines in the years you mention were excellent engines. The V-8 isn't bad either, so it may be something of a wash in that department. The 91-94 4.0's have the A4LD transmission. While I think it may get a worse rap than it deserves it certainly has a track record of problems. Someone correct me if I am wrong but the V-8 for the years you mentioned was (I believe) mated to the 4R70W transmission. Candidly, it is a stronger transmission (course it's handling more torque too). [I did a little research -The 4R70W is the successor to the AODE, and was beefed up and introduced in 1993 on the Lincoln Continental. In later years it more or less replaced the AODE due to it being more reliable. It soon started being used behind other heavier applications, including the Explorer with the 5.0.]

Transfer case? I'd say the BW 1354 (91-94 4.0's) is probably better repair wise than the 4405 (which I think is what's in the V-8's).

96-01 V8s did have the 4R70Ws

I think in 95 the V6s went to the 4405 tcase... while the 96-01 V8s had the 4404. :D

Thanks Section525. I stand corrected. And, for the record, I know nothing about the reliability of the 4404.

They're okay. If the drivetrain parts were to go on a 5.0L it would most likely be 4404, than 4R70W, then the motor. :D
