Explorer 5.0 questions need some info please

Hello guys,
I have a few questions that I would like to ask. First off let me say that I am a Ford guy been one all my life. I was one of the guys that had their plant shut down here in Norfolk. So when I say what I am going to do please don’t flame me. Ok I have an 89 Jeep wrangler that I got for a REALLY good price. I want to do a drive line swap in it. I have a Dana 44 for the front already. I was looking at a 5.0 mustang motor for the engine but my cousin reminded me about the explorer having a 5.0 in it. Duh! I was looking at an 8.8 from an explorer any way because you do not need to cut the tubes. So why not get a whole explorer and pull motor and tranny? Any way I am rambling on here. I have found a 96X that has 105k miles on it body is ok interior really is trashed. But it runs and has a disc rear in it. There is a slight upper knock in the motor but quits down after warm but is still there. I plan on rebuilding any way so I am not worried about that. Just the rear end alone runs $350 to $450 anyway.

OK here are my questions
What are the differences in the 5.0 on the different years? I did a search and looked at the specs page and that gave me the hp and compression differences but I am looking for info like mass air, which ones have the gt40 and gt40p heads? ob1 ob 2? You know that kind of stuff.

I was really looking for the gt40p head one but this 96 I can get for $500. I may even be able to get him lower. All the things that people are turned off on I don’t care about. Plus if I get it I can part out a lot of good stuff and make back a little bit. Sorry for the long post thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks! the egr tube if its coming out the side of the head its a gt40p right? Is there a bigger advantage on going with the later 5.0 than a 96? I have read that these 5.0 motors in the explorers are the same ones in the cobra mustang any truth to that? and are these mass air or speed density? Thanks a million for any help.

They're mass air, they share a lot of components with the cobra motors, but aren't the same motor. You'll see the egr better coming out of the exhaust manifold, It's towards the back of the manifold, between 2 of the cylinders, I just can't remember which 2 off the top of my head.
 












thanks for the responses guys. that helps a lot. right now i have the choice between a 96 explorer for $500 thats in poor shape as far as the interior goes but starts up and runs fine or a 99 that was rolled for $1000. I looked at the spec page and it looks like the only differance in the motors from those years is 4HP. I think the 96 may be the better choice.
