1999 Ranger XLT
Hi everyone, this is my first post.
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT with the 4R44E automatic transmission. I bought it used last year, with about 115000 miles on it. It runs fine except a problem has appeared where the transmission no longer wants to shift. Instead it seems to lose gear and allow the motor to rev for several seconds before it finds the a gear. This started suddenly a few weeks ago, and has rapidly progressed to the point that the truck is not safe to drive in traffic. I have done some net searching and suspect the valve assembly.
I have no first hand experience with auto-trannys, but have rebuilt 2 manual trannys in my lifetime with success. I have no unusual tools, but a pretty good selection of "shade-tree" tools. I bought a shop manual on ebay on my transmission, which leaves me scratching my head.
My first question is what do those with experience think might actually be going on? I only suspect the valve assembly because of what I've been told, not based on any book knowledge or experience.
My second question is, given that I'm not dumb and not afraid to get greasy, can I realistically expect to be able to fix this transmission myself? Fact is I'm kinda broke, and would like to fix this with as little cost as possible. Looking for advice in that regard.
thanks in advance for any assistance,
walter

I think a fluid change would be in order.. But I think your issue is a band adjustment.. I'm sure others here who have the know how and have done it before can guide you through it.. It's not hard!! But do look into a band adjustment! George

Thank you George, I will look into that!
