I just bought my S/T and it only had one PATS chipped key. After a couple of eye popping $100+ quotes from stealerships I started looking for options. I found this thread on our own site!!

It only took about 30 minutes. I would have been able to finish it quicker but it took a while for me to find the "pin" that holds the key tumbler assy in place.

I had that same problem, finding the pin that holds it all in.

uhhhhhhhhh forget all that for your '03. Buy a key from an eBay seller. Make sure it's a FORD script or Strattec stamped key, get it cut anywhere that cuts keys and find a dealership that is reasonable to program it. It's $41.50 here. Now BUY TWO KEYS. When you have two you can always program a third yourself.

I get my keys here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item563dda4b06

Reasonable?!

How is 41.50 plus at least ten bucks just for the key 'reasonable'? $1.59 for a key at Lowe's is reasonable. And like he said (as did I in my tutorial), it only takes half an hour for the mod.

Selling chipped keys for an exorbitant amount of money is just another way for the stealership to rook people that don't know any better. Glad I could help those people out.

Stop taking their money!!:frustrate

Have you tried this on anything newer than your '00 ?? You "rig" it your way, I prefer the right way.

And I haven't taken a dime of your or anyone else's money.:mattmoon:

Nope. Why would it matter? It's the same system. A ring around the ignition reads the chip and sends a signal, telling the truck it's good to start. Zip-tie your chip in the ring, drop it behind the dash, and it constantly tells your truck it can start. That's how you can use any copy of your key to start your truck.

All the PATS systems work the same, so it wouldn't matter if you did it on an '00' or an '03', or whatever.

The PATS is the same the "sensor" that reads the keys are not all the same. I've done this on older models as a test and it worked just taping the key under the column because there was an "antenna" loop around the column. I haven't tried your method on late models by disassembling the ignition.

But then again, I prefer the PATS system to be operational and the Sport Trac's have a door keypad so you're not likely to get locked out.

My 'O3 doesn't have an antenna loop??? it has a ring about the size of a 1/2 dollar around the ignition tumbler. And it isn't very sensitive at all. There was only one place I could hold the chipped key outside of it where it would work and it literally had to be touching it. I did shop around the Homestead/Miami area. Like I said 130-150 bucks. (vs.$5 at Ace hardware for 2 keys and they were only that expensive cuz I got the plastic dipped handles) And I've heard of those ebay keys having issues in extreme hot temps (kinda like we have down here in S. Fl) Also my '03 XLS S/T doesn't have any keypad on the door!! I wanted the least electronics I could get. That PATS is just another "feature" that could disable an otherwise perfectly good truck when I need it. Anybody know of a way to convert the door windows to manual??

If you're happy, I'm thrilled!
Hmmmmm never seen a Trac without a keypad. But yours is an 03 4x2 with a 5 speed, rare bird! Temps there anything like the 100 we'll be having here the rest of the week? If you "know" of defective Ford script or Strattec keys being sold on eBay please post the seller so we can avoid that trouble. That would suck! Manual windows? Don't know of any conversions for that. Maybe a Ranger for the fronts

Rare indeed!!! you have know idea how long I've looked for one, not necessarily the '03 part, just a low mileage 2wd 5speed.

Yep kinda like your 100 degrees only factor in the equatorial UV levels and heat indexes we get down here.

I don't know which seller it was, or which keys, I'd take my chances on a Ford OEM item though. However I did read about it on this forum.

Out of all the Sport Trac's I've seen go through the sale, when I was looking for one, there's only been one manual transmission truck. Didn't bid on it because frankly I never want anything not an automatic again. Had my fill of shifting gears. Had I known how rare they were I might have bought it to make a buck on......

On the keys, the Ford service manuals say non-Ford or non-Strattec keys can cause PATS problems. Of course with your solution it matters not.

Mine doent have the keypad either but mine is also a rare model.

Down here during the summer, the heat index is at least 100 everday. Its hot and muggy.
