Need VIN# 02/03 Mounty 2wd 3.55 or 3.73 LSD Differential

Trying to get a VIN number off of any 02/03 Mountaineer that is 2WD only and Has a 3.55 or 3.73 Rear Gear WITH Factory LSD Limited Slip Differential. If anyone could help me out on this it would greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure why you need someone else's VIN # but here are the transmission/axle codes:

Here are some codes to ID the transmission from the ID sticker on the driver’s side door area.
I had a 03 xls and now have a 05 Mountaineer and both had the v coded 5R55(s) transmissions.
Both were high miles and both worked real good after the Ford dealer transmission flush and fill with Mercron 5

The VIN# doesn't encode the axle/differential info. Its on a placard on the door area

If you run your vin# at a ford dealer and for the vin details it will tell you both gear ratio and with or w/out limited slip on the some models starting around 97 and up.

Search eBay...people put their VIN's in the listing, and there are hundreds of Explorers listed.

I doubt that you're going to get anybody here to give you their VIN....

To be able to order a complete differential unit from Ford with it complete they need a VIN number to be able to pull up the exact irs differential. I can't use mine because it use to be awd and now its 2wd and it had an open diff, I want to put a lsd diff back in with a 3.55 or 3.73, so I need the vin to order an exact replacement for what I want, also as mentioned in a few posts, I have an early 02 production and my tranny is a 5r55W, with the bigger stall and 3.90 gear in the rear it really rips..Any help is appreciated. First, the guy at the parts counter is just being lazy. Yes, it's easier for them to look stuff up with a VIN, but it's not impossible to do it without. Especially after you tell them why you don't have a "correct" vin, they should be able and WILLING to find a way around the problem for you (the customer). If they really insist on having a VIN, they could go throught their own customer files and find an appropriate one to use. After all, you're buying what I'm assuming is an insanely overpriced rear from them; they should be bending over backwards and kissing your ass to sell it.

Which brings me to my next point: Why on earth are you buying a complete rear from the "stealership"? A used, low mileage diff would be much cheaper. Try the junkyards (sorry, "automotive recyclers")/ebay/craigslist/etc... For that matter, it would be far cheaper to just put new gears and a L/S in your existing diff, and you could do a full professional rebuild, and still be ahead of a complete new factory rear.

So nowhere in the Ford Service Dept's database can they lookup a part to order for you without a VIN, and furthermore, they do not have access to their own database in order to find a VIN off a specific make?

I'm ford direct, my direct supplier says the parts come up individually in his system and isn't showing it fully assembled in his system, but said if I had a vin number it would pull it up, trust me this guy runs circles around any dealership parts counter, if he tells me something thats pretty much just the way it is. And a used LKQ with over 100K miles is $350 and $450 for 75K miles. I don't really have the time to tie up a lift during the rebuild, if I have it already assembled its a quick job and I don't have to do anything, pinion bearing I'm almost positive locked up on the pinion, or my race spun, so without all the work to tear it down, then possibly needing to buy a case, I'm just taking the simpler approach, sometimes a few extra bucks is worth the peace of mind and less labor time, sometimes cheap isn't the best way out.

Anyone know if a 2004 4.0L Differential Assembly will Fit the 2002 4.6L mountaineer? Axle Splines, Pinion Flange to Driveshaft, etc...

Yes, it will fit. Ensure they are the same ratio.
You could buy a rebuilt unit for between $895-$995, depending on open or limited slip from ericautopart. Check this thread:

As pos mounty said, just ensure that you match the gear ratio to whatever you have in there...unless you're doing both diffs and then you have your choice of the 3.55 or 3.73
