The aftermarket stereo in my 1993 XLT 4 door that the previous owner had installed finally went south. I purchased a CD player but during installation, I could not get any of the speakers to work. In desperation, I removed the front left speaker and hoked it directly to the new stereo. It worked fine. Is there something between the harness at the back of the stereo and the speakers that could have gone bad? Your help is desperatly needed and greatly appreciated.

are you positive all your connections are with the right wires?

I'm sure the power, ground, and memory feed to the head unit are correct. Its just those darn speakers that are getting me. If I look in my Haynes manual, my color codes are all different. as a matter of fact, it seems that there was probablt some type of factory harness that was cut off previously. All of the speaker wires feed through a single grey cable that feeds doen to the floor level at the center, then goes off somewhere. I tried do a resistance test on all of the various combinations to match up "pairs" of wires but that didn't help. Also, I removes the right front speaker, hooked it up directly and it works fine. Its almost like something is disconnected the back of the stero and the speakers. Is there any hope for me???
Thanks for your help

Does your Explorer have the stock amplifier in the back? If so, did you bypass it or leave it inline? Did you miss the wiring that turns the amp on? If so, then your head unit is sending out signal, but the amp isn't turning on, so no signal's getting to the speakers. This is a common overlooked prob. All I can think of at this time!

Sounds like you'll have to

run new all wire from your head unit (amp?) to each speaker.

a pain in the arse, definitely - but you really don't know what was done in the past (& doing an archaeological dig seems kinda pointless).

Spend an hour or two pulling wire though the factory conduits into each door & you'll KNOW where each wire goes.

good luck
