i have a 96 sport with 145k on the ticker. my car died on the way home last week. im guessing it's the alternator. is there anything else that it could be?

the week before the car would start and turn over but it would just go dead. i had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it going. but since the break down, the car won't turn over. battery might be little low but i should have at least enough juice to start it.

could it be something more $$$. i don't want to get rid of her yet.

thanks in advance.

It's hard to say for sure. If it is the Battery or alternator I would still replace them before getting rid of it.

If it just died suddenly while you were driving, and there was no low indication on the voltmeter, I would suspect that it lost fuel or spark. Charge the battery first. Turn on the ignition without cranking it and listen carefully for the fuel pump. You will hear the pump run for about 2 seconds and stop, as it builds up fuel pressure. If you don't hear it, check the fuel pump fuse, relay, pump wires, and finally the pump. A coworker had his '94 die and it turned out to be a a corroded and broken wire at the fuel pump wiring connector on the frame near the spare tire.

If you are satisfied that the pump is running, have someone crank the engine and look for spark.

Another possibility is a faulty fuel pressure regulator or clogged fuel filter. Has the filter ever been changed?

Try posting your problem in the "Explorer 911" section. You wll get many other suggestions from the experts.
