I purchased a Hypertech Power Programmer III from www.truckaddons.com unfortunately. I received it and it didn't do what I wanted it to do, or do what they told me it would do. I called them and they told me that if I returned that they would charge me a 35% restocking fee plus I had to pay to ship it back. It cost me 331.26 for the total and the restocking fee would be $115!!!! They are complete *****uckers! I tried to reason with them but they wouldn't listen. They are lying pompous a**holes. . I plan to post messages about them everywhere I can.

I would appreciate it if no one would buy anything from this company or refer them to anyone. If you buy something from these people and its not what they say it is you would understand what I am feeling. I have contacted the Better Business Bureau and filed a complaint against them. I just like to share the experience with my fellow Ford Explorers!

PLEASE PASS THE WORD!

If you bought it with your credit card , call the credit card company/bank and dispute the charges . They will tell you to ship the item back to the store most likely and then they will work at refunding you . Call em and see what they can do .

jeeze. thats nuts. all those salesman look like crooks in the picture. i would call the credit card company or either try something else with truckaddons. maybe tell them that you are spreading the word. hell i would never buy from that place. looks like a dump first of all an i dont think i'd trust them with my CC#. truckperformance is much MUCH better!

Sorry to hear that but could you tell us what they said the programmer would do that it didnt? It may help some of us from wasting money on a product that sucks.

It sounds like they (truckaddons) really suck. If it makes you feel any better, I'll never buy anything from them. I say they mess with one of us, they mess with us all. Their profits must suffer for their ignorance.

What it didn't...

It was supposed to be able to fix my speedometer since i put bigger tires on. Also it was supposed to be able to change the shift points to compensate for the tire size. It seems that it is only for the 98 and older models, Hypertech said that they are able to do it for 99-newer only.

Where do u live nytefog? Our news stations round here have whats called "consumer lawyers". If they take ur case they do a segmant and put it on the air. Comapanies dont like the bad publicity and usually comply. Just a thought tho.

info

I live in NJ but the company is from KY. I have left messages for the customer services and told them if they didn't call me back that i was going to file a complaint with the BBB. They never called back......go figure.

yes, but the bbb doesnt have media coverage..... here we have channel 7's "7 On Your Side W/ Michael Finney"

that really sucks. i wont buy anything from there. i'm sick of all these companies with bad business practices trying to rip people off.

nytefog - What year is your Explorer (fill out your profile). I was somewhat confused by your message. It looks like you are trying to say that you figure it is for '98 and older models and that Hypertech says that it is for '99 and newer only? What did truckaddons say it is for? I do know that the '99 and newer Explorer speedometers have to be programmed electronically. I also know that the '97 and older Explorers have to be re-programmed with a $9 speedometer gear. I still haven't heard whether or not the '98 have the gear or are all electronic. My co-worker has a '98 sitting in the parking lot. I'll see if he minds if I crawl under his and look. If yours is a '97 (and maybe '98) or older, then all you need is a new gear to change your speedometer. Your transmission shift points will be fixed as well. If yours is a '99 (and maybe '98) or newer then Ford can reprogram your speedometer for about $75. Check with GJarret, he already had his done. If that is the case, then the Hypertech should work on yours without having to go to Ford.

Regardless, your post about the companies customer service performance and their outrageous 35% restocking fee should prevent some people here from doing business with them. I try to avoid companies that charge a restocking fee. I just got screwed out of about $35 when I returned a CD-RW to a companie that sent me a solicitation through Yahoo Stores. They sent me an add for a 12X-10X-32X CD-RW for $127 after shipping. It sounded like a good deal so I ordered it. The day I received it, I checked with Best Buy and found that they had the same CD-RW on sale for $89 plus it also included a $20 mail in rebate. I contacted the company asking them to either refund the difference in price or issue me an RMA number and I would return the CD-RW un-opened. They never responded so I called them up to get the RMA number. They only credited me $95 after deducting their restocking fee and shipping. I still ended up ahead by about $20 once I get my $20 rebate back. It taught me to check out a companies return policy before ordering from them. It also taught me to never do business with any of Yahoo's stores.

So when you bought this did you check with hypertech to see that the chip would do these things you wanted? It seems to me that would be a much smarter move to make. Check with the company that makes the product not the people who sell it.

On that note its obvious you did business with a company that is not intrested in customer service which sucks. Hopefully your able to dispute the charges on the chip.

cont.....

I bought it because i wanted to fix my speedo. I ask the Sales Person about it and they said it would do that. I get the package, read the manual and There isn't anything about how to fix your speedo. I then called Hypertech and they told me that it is only available for exploreres that are '99 and newer.

How do i go about changing this gear? How do i know what new gear to change it to? I now have 31x10.5x15? I am trying to remember what i had on there before....They were the AT Wilderness, the recalled ones.....maybe 235/.../

thanx

yup stock ones are 235/75/15..... but stock and 31s should not really change speedo gears. according to gear calculators, if my spedo says 60 i am really doing 66...not much of a deal

Its not the speedo really, its more the shift points. I have notices that it struggles sometimes because it is not down shift when it should.

I don't know if the '98 has the gear but if it does, look for something like:

331-361-2397.jpg

This is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) from my '97 SOHC. On my 4x4 it is mounted on the transfer case. I am assuming that even the AWD has something similar to a transfer case. Look there. If it isn't there, look at the end of your transmission. Remove the one bolt that is next to it to remove the retaining clip. Once removed, the VSS will slide right out. The gear slides off the end of the VSS. Do a search under the tires board and you will come up with a list of part numbers for the various speedometer gears that I posted a while back. Take that and your gear to Ford and get one one tooth off from the one you have. I can't remember if you want one more tooth or one less, the thread that I posted in will tell you. The gear costs about $9 and takes 5 minutes to put in.

Some people like their speedometer to read a little closer than 10% to the true speed. For $9 and 5 minutes of my time, I did.

Thank You! You been extremly helpful.

OK, I finally decided to crawl under my co-workers '98. Boy was it hard after getting used to crawling under mine:) His '98 5-speed automatic does not have a VSS. Where my VSS is, his is just metal, not even a plug. Must be a different part number for his transfer case than the '97. In light of this I would be surprised if you find a VSS on your '98 4-speed automatic.

another reason is the odometer. The same sensor controlls the odometer so you will never know the exact mileage again (which could be a good thing :)
