I want to add as many of the options that ford had for these Explorers.
I have gained access to the keyless entry system (I found the code), but that is all I have discovered.

I have questions...

Do these vehicles that have the keypad on the door ALL have the ability to have a remote/key (Becuase I can buy one on ebay)??

I also have cruise, and rear air and audio controls, but my X is apparently featureless beyond that.

I can find / buy all the parts from Ebay or users here, but how do I add the:

Auto Dimming Mirror
CD changer
Message center
The backup sensor system
Homelink
Automatic climate controller
Heated side mirrors, (How do I know if I already have them?)

Am I missing some cool things in this list that I might want to add?

Are the harnesses all the same and just need me to plug in the devices?

I build Mazda RX-7's and thats how they are...

I tried a VIN decoder, to see what options were installed, but that didnt tell me.

I also need to know if the two Factory Service Manuals are availalable online for download?
I realize they are 1000 pages or more, but they should be out there somewhere, right?

If you have the keypad, you should have remote entry capability. Finding the correct FOB might be tough if you don't have one to show which one you need.

Every single one on your list can be added. Some are easy, some are going to be a real job. Your CD changer for example. You need to have a head unit capable of controlling it. You also need to ensure you get the changer designed for your head unit. There are different ones that Ford used. You might be better off going aftermarket.

ATC has been done and there is a good write up on it. The one I saw was done in a Ranger...but it's the same process. I can't remember if it's on this site. But I found it by Google if I recall when I was looking for something else. Same with the message center. There is a GREAT write up here for that.

I've put Homelink in every vehicle I own. It's extremely easy. You should be able to buy a visor with it in it. On my 95, I bought one out of a Chrysler and used their switches in the overhead console. It looks like it came from the factory that way.

The park assist (back up sensors) might be a pain. I haven't done that. But I can't help but think it could be added.

Auto dim mirror is also an easy add on. However, if you don't have auto lamp, you may have to go to Gentek or similar and get a mirror. You can even buy one with the Homelink in it! I would consider that rather than put the factory mirror in with all the Auto Lamp stuff included you wouldn't need.

If your mirrors are heated, it will say "heated" on the glass. To add those would mean some tricky wiring. I believe they come on with the rear defrost. You would need to see how the factory integrated that circuit and wired it. Should be able to be done though.

Hope some of this helps

Call your local junkyards and get in good with them, that is what I did when I was building my Mach 1 many years ago.

Let us know on the back up sensors, that sounds cool!

What is ATC?
Auto Traction Control?

I hadn't seen that feature in the manual for this model.

I have ordered the Factory service Manuals, but still no luck in finding them online.

I think he meant EATC Electronic Automatic Temperature Control

Heated Mirrors

Did any of the 2nd Generations come with Heated Mirrors?

Yup, EB & Limited IIRC
