Well...my friend and I went to the mechanics yesterday and asked him how much it would cost to get the timing chain replaced. The estimate was around $2000 which includes labor and parts. Being cheap as hell I was wondering if it would be a good idea to just replace the whole engine. I talked to a few auto salvage yards and they said that I could get one for around $600. I just got two questions...

1) How hard is it to replace the entire engine on a 98' Explorer 4WD SOHC 4.0L? I personally hate this engine..it's a huge pain to work on. But is it even worth replacing if the timing chain is out?

2) What engines are combatible with my truck? Could I put a V8 from a 2nd Gen in and would it fit? I really want to make it a V8 and stay away from the SOHC

Thanks for any help

Thats about what we would pay here to have the chains and tensioners replaced. I think you may be making a mistake buying from a salvage yard unless you can hear the engine running mate.
The engine swap is not that bad if you have a hoist or something good and strong to lift the engine out.
I dont know what else you could put in there, cant advise on that in the uk we cannot getr any alternatives to the stock lump at all!
If i was you I would get the chains and tensioners done. and get the ecu chipped for better performance. That should out a smile on your face like a new car again!

its just kinda depressing lol thats almost as much as I paid for the entire truck it's crazy-the kit is $1200 and labor would be around $1000. You might be right though...

Has anyone tried doing the chain and all that themselves?

thanks for the reply
