Welsome to the site first off. :) Probably the most popular mufflers around here are the Flowmasters. Other popular ones are Gibson, Dynomax, and Magnaflow. If you want a nice rumble outside, but not a huge amount of "drone" at crusing speeds you may want to look into the Flowmaster 50 series. The 40's are a tad louder, but have a lot more in cab rumble, that some people get tired of. I'm sure others will throw in thier 2 cents.

that super 40 sounds nice, but what else would i need to get, i looked into the flowmaster force II and that was a whole bolt on kit. how do you guys like those? with the super 40 i would need to order what else for it to be complete? thanks

I just bought the muffler for $75 and am having a local muffler/exhaust shop bend and then weld or clamp up the pipes they already have and install for around $55

$130 total which is around $30 bucks cheaper then the kit and I don't have to get under the truck and do any work ;)

hmm that sounds like a very enticing idea. i saw the super 40 on ebayfor 65, good deal? would their be any way to make it a dual exuast or even get a dual exhaust? what would be the disadvatages to them?

Thats where I got mine, $65 plus $10 shipping.

IF you want dual exhuast you need to get a single in/dual out muffler ( I don't know if super 40's come in this config.)

The disadvantage to the dual exhuast is less low-end torque for more highway passing power. The same with the bigger diamter tubing you go. I opted for a single 2.5' in and out for my 4.0 OHV.

55 bucks to install a niversal muffler is kinda dreaming. At least around here it is. That isnt even an hour labor.

If it were just labor I wouldn't pay for that. But I'm paying for custom cut and bent pipes as well.

custom bent pipes for 55 bucks installed. Now you are totaly dreaming. sorry but that isnt even slightly realistic

I talked to the guy at Omni mufflers located in Ashland,KY somewheres on Greenup Ave. A couple days on the phone. He guaranteed me it would be right around $55.

We have decent shops that don't jack you around.

If you are having it done for that price, even single in/out you are getting a great deal. I'm having my Montaineer done w/ duals and its going to run about $375 w/ tips and muffler, granted the muffler is a little more and theirs more work having to bend that second pipe.

Most people I've heard paying about $200 or so w/ muffler and installation for a Single in/out setup like you are talking.

Have an appointment on Tuesday morning to have mine done, wohoo!

Our shop comes in the lowest in the area for custom pipes and would change about 150 not including a muffler or tip

Oh well with the money I saved form the good deal I guess,I bought a KKM :D

$225 no muffler, cat-back, stainless steel tips. The main problem with running duals on an explorer is the spare tire. I watched the mechanic run mine for about an hour and it was a royal PITA. It seemed like every 6" once he got behind the rear axle it was another bend. I would also get stainless steel tips vs chrome. I've had my SS ones for 3 years and one of my friends got duals run on his chevrolet six months ago and mine look better than his do right now.

What do you think about not getting tips at all?

I think I might just have mine exit and cut just like the stock exhaust.

anyone have a dual exhaust setup on a 91-94 X?

What has everyone done or going to do about the brake lines and cables in the way?

I bent a dual system for a 92 sport the other day. the lines didnt really pose a problem. Took some time but came out OK. So much for a decent departure angle though.

As long as the pipe isn't touching the line, will it cause any problems? I don't like these places with people with no balls to do a real good custom job. And especially when they want to charge me $280 alone for a Flowmaster muffler which I didn't even want!!! And they told me that it couldn't be done at all and told about different mufflers and setups that could be run and that I was wrong when I was going on information based on MANY other Explorer owners on this site who have got it done. I'm going to bring it in to another place tomorrow to make sure that they can do it since their quote was several hundred dollars cheaper than what Tuffy quoted me
