Hello everyone im Mark. After 6yrs and two 93 Probe GTs later, i finally upgraded to a SUV. I just got a 01 Explorer Sport and i love it. Only there is a few things worrying me. Now it has 80k miles on it. Im worried the guy who owened it before me wasnt using synthetic blend like it calls for. I changed the oil and blend and afterwards i started noticing it would smoke a little when i first started it, then nothing. I ran it for a few weeks then flushed it out. Seems to run fine now, i think maybe it was only smoking a little when theres alot of moisture in the air..i dunno. Anyone have this problem.

Only real concern now is when i switch it into 4x4. It will switch into High no problem but not low. Ive tried in park, in 1st gear moving at 1-5mph, etc and nothing. Now when its in High it sounds a little loud, not realy loud but to where i can hear it drivin around. Any ideas!!

to switch to 4wd low you need to come to a stop position, but don`t turn off the engine. Then go to neutral and as you pushing the brakes turn the switch to 4wd low.

you should be able to hear when it locks to 4wd low and after you go to D,1 or 2 you are ready to go.

don`t use 4wd low when is not really needed and especially in dry pavement.

i hope i help.

As for the smoke, it may have just been a small amount of oil that was leaking through the gaskets since you changed the type of oil... you may want to look into that.

And the 4x4, when it switches to low it will make a noticeable noise but don’ worry about it. And if the LOW still doesn’t work then look into needing a new electronic sensor that goes from the switch to the tranny, that’s what mine needed. And I don't know about the noise in HIGH cause mine has never mad it.

Just to let you know how it works... when you turn the switch to HIGH the tranny goes from the center position slightly to the right but when you put it to the LOW it goes from the center position all the way around to the left so that it is on the other side of the high setting and then clicks in (that would be the cause of the noise)
