New Explorer with water in the automatic transmission.

Hi to all this is my 1st posting. we have recently bought a lovely 1999 explorer (north face) as a temporary car while my wife's frontera was being repaired, now the frontera is back she will not go back to it, as she love's explorer much more. The ride is better and she feels more secure. I have driven it ( I usually drive a discovery for my work) and again impressed, so that got me thinking, should I look for another one for myself. I do a few miles so looking for one with low mileage and LPG converted. The reason for the posting, there is one that is not to far from me, but has a small problem with water in the auto transmission. He is unsure where it comes from? any suggestion? still finding my way around the site. many thanks Gary

As for water in the transmission, it has to be coming from the radiator as there is a transmission cooler in the bottom of the rad. Over here we have an additional cooler in front of the rad.

Many thanks Howard, will have to investigate further, are these cooler replace able, if so would you know where the best place to obtain one from, is there a recommended Ford Explorer supplier in England. Many thanks Gary

It would mean replacing the radiator as it's an all in one unit. There are two contacts I can recommend.

When there is water in the autotrans and depending on how long it has been there, you may need a total rebuild. It maybe more cost friendly to find a replacement. If can get the car at a good price, less cost of trans replacement, go for it. I had the same thing happen to me with my 00XLT in 2007. Total trans rebuild, new radiator and shift mod it cost me $3,500 US.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmissions section. Water will cause corrosion very quicky inside of the transmission. Replace the radiator, and flush the transmission. Don't continue driving it this way.

many thanks still considering the options? the local garage are 4x4's he suggested source a donor trans box and rad to be on the safe side. It would be more cost effected in the long run. So will call Justin or contact chrisqulech to find the cost many thanks again,and a very informative site. Gary

x2 on the new radiator and a flush. If the trans worked fine before the leak and hasn't been driven much since, there is a good chance you can save it.

Hi Sean, from what I can gather, it hasn't been driven since the fault was discovered, however the owner was unsure how long the water has been in the trans as was not used very often. many thanks gary
