Just picked us a 98 Explorer SOHC 4x4 for a great price. It does however have one problem (so far lol). The doors only lock and unlock with the key and I have to individually lock and unlock all the doors as the central locking wont work.

The only time I can get any sort of operation of the locks is using the button next to the electric window switches and even then it wont always lock and unlock the doors as the solenoids sometimes sound weak.

I have checked the wires where they split under the drivers side rear seat and they look fine. The solenoid in the rear under the cover works as I can hear it click when I press the button by the window switches.

Any ideas?

Try checking the harness in the driver's door jamb area. Start by unhooking the big plug that's the easiest place to start check for corrosion and plug it back in to test. I have heard the wire bundle there that flexes every time the door is used, this is a common place for wires to break.

there's a wire loom that runs down the driver's side of the truck, under the carpet, just behind the sill/scuff plates. remove the sill plate on the rear driver's side door to access this wire bundle near where it goes under the rear seat. you should see a pink wire with a green stripe. this wire has a splice which corrodes and turns green (a common problem). cut out the old splice and replace the connection. solder it and cover with shrink wrap. i'll try to find you a link w/pics.
