Brand new to the world of Explorers and FORDS for that matter.

Just bought a'91 from a friend who is mechanically illiterate.
He had oil changes every 3K but everything else.. If it wasn't broken......
Actually This is the newest car to my flock and it has the least amount of mileage at 182K.

I bought this as an interm car while I replace the doors and rear fenders and paint my wifes '85 Chevy Stepside pickup. That baby has 275K on the clock with no major motor work.

I have a Volvo (I know I can't believe I own it either) It's an '89 with 232K on it.
My pride and joy is my '75 Jeep CJ5. It has too many Mods to list. Lets just say that the Dashboard and axles are the only things left stock.

ANYWAY, I have done ALLLL the maintainence and modifying of my vehicles and I hope to do the same with this Explorer for as long as I own it.

The door hinges need help. I heard that the upper hinge is tack welded as well as bolted to the body. That should be a thrill.

The plugs, from what I understand have NEVER been changed. I find that hard to believe but I will be replacing wires and plugs this weekend.
The truck supposedly has an intermittent 'No Start' problem. I'm guessing Fuel pump or Pump Relay. any thoughts? Can someone tell me wher ethe Relay is located? That's how Niave I am to this vehicle.

Hi, and welcome to the site.
I'm sure you will find just about everything you would ever want to know about your Explorer and then some from this board.
I can't help you on your pre95 but there are others that I'm sure will chime in and let you know where the relay is.
I am thinking that since the previous owner never changed the plugs and wires, that after you change them, you might not have that intermittent starting problem again. The stock wires have alot of inductive resistence in them after 80k or so since they are carbon wires.

Thanks Ray. The wire change making the No Start go away would be very welcome. I want to get this on the road soon so I can get started on the truck. I hope it would be that easy.

You know... The Previous owner did mention it happened on a wet, damp day. That COULD be broken down insulation on the wires. I was thinking bad connections elswhere but I like your thought. much easier if the wires make the problem go away.

Hey Tony welcome !!
Don't be a stranger.

The bottom door hinge is kinda easy but the top takes a good bit of work. It is not welded on but there is a bolt that goes from the inside out. It is way up behind the dash. It is possible but not easy by any means.
Some folk here have just swpaed the pins and have had good success.

Yeah, those old Volvo's just never die do they ?
I had a 73 whose odomoter broke @ 115,000 and it drove for five years after that.
If It hadn't gotten a little too friendly with a Dodge Ram it likely would be driving today.

Excellent TPLYNCH, I was just wondering about the tailights. I saw the screws on the Top of the assembly but also thought I might get to the bulbs from the inside of the car.

I must sound so dumb. I am a very good wrencher but no zero on the thinkings of Ford designers.

I will appoligize in advance for all my future dumb questions.
