Hey guys I just bought myself a 2000 explorer sport 2 door 4wd with the 4L V6 engine. What I cant find out is how to tell if I have the v6 with the 160 hp or the v6 with 200 hp. Is there anything I can look at to find out?

Thanks

I believe they switched to the SOHC 4.0L (the one with the 205 ponies) in late 90's for the sports. Open the hood and see if the splashguard on top of the engine says SOHC on it.

What is the 8th digit of the VIN?
X is the 160hp ohv engine.
E is the 200hp SOHC engine.

Both engines were used unless model year 2001...

The vin number is the quickest way to determine without popping the hood...

On the OHV, the intake has 4.0 EFI embossed into it...On the SOHC, the intake has SOHC embossed on the cover of the throttle body...If the cover is gone, the SOHC upper intake looks like the lower picture...

The other way to tell is to just drive it and if it starts rattling after a few thou then its the SOHC. LOL
