I am new here and this is my first post. I am probably not doing this right, but I have tried to Search for an answer without success.

Here is my problem: I can't seem to engage the four-wheel drive 2006 Ford Ranger XLT, following the normal engagement procedures as outlined in the owners' manual. This vehicle has 28,000 miles on it and I have only used the four-wheel drive a dozen times or, the last time being about six months ago. We had snow here the night before last and I was unable to get it into four-wheel drive. The "4x4" indicator does not appear on the dashboard display, nor is there any soft sound and "thump" normally associated with 4WD engagement. Anyone?

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed, and moved your thread to the Ranger section for more attention. Have you looked at the sticky threads on the top of the transmission section for more information?

No, I have not yet looked under that heading yet. But thanks for the tip. Also, thanks much for moving my thread to the Ranger section.

Try this:

Tranny in neutral, foot on brake - shift into 4x4. Slowly release brake, moving forward 4 - 6 inches. If that does not work, check the shift motor (mounting on the back side of the transfer case.)
