hi all frank here i'm the somtimes proud owner of 2 1996 xlt's both 4.0l auto with over 200k. the forum is GREAT, with some really smart guys answering questions. in the past i've been able to answer my questions by reading old posts (very helpful and imformative) but now i have a question a can't find the answer too. help would be most welcome.

i have a speedo that dosn't work. the sending unit works and meshes with the "ring" gear on the out put shaft of the transfercase. the "ring"gear spins freely on the shaft, i can't believe that it should do this. can i remove the "ring" gear through the output shaft opening or do i need to disassemble the tc. am i missing somthing? what questions am i not asking that i should.
again thanks for all the help in the past and in the future.

You might want to try posting it in the transmission section or have a moderator move this one into it.

i figured some things out. the speedo gear will free wheel when the dive line yoke is removed. it is sandwiched between the yoke and a gear. when the yoke is removed the friction is gone. and the gear can be removed through the back of the transfer case . they told me that a magnet works because it has to slide out evenly. i took two 6 x 1 1/2 drywall screws and screwed them to the gear at 3 and 9 oclock then used them to slid the gear out and the gear was worn out made a trip to the u-pull-it 2 dollar cover charge and 2 dollars for the gear and i now have a working speedometer. overdrive and reverse dont work too good but at least i know how fast i can go in 2nd.

thanks for all the support, frank

no the one in the tc was a off white and the vss was a shade of pink and all the tc gears ive seen are the off white i dont know if they all are but the four that ive seen were
