ok i been searching around this site and found alot of good info! but still got some questions. I'm about to doing the famous solid axle swap on my 92 explorer 4x4. Im going to use and dana 44 eb axle, and wagoneer leaf springs. Yeah im going leaf sprung. Anyways here are my list of questions
1.) How much lift would i get if i would use stock wagoneer leaf springs and a soa on the front?
2.) since im goin SAS do i need a track bar?
3.) with goin soa on the front will i need hi steer? or will a drop pitman arm work?

im shooting for 7" or more of lift so i can run 35's easy
I think i could do this fairly cheap, i can make the front crossmember, front shackles, and i can make a rear shackle mount and even the rear shackles
so im shooting for under $500 with out regearing or new driveshaft

thanks guys

1. Depends on if you go shackle forward or rearward and how you build your mounts. Probably anywher from 5-8" of lift is possible.

2. No however if you dont go histeer you will get bump steer.

3. More then likly you will need histeer. Guess it depends on how much drop your pitman arm has and how much angle you will let your draglink have.

dont forget longer brake lines. My "suspension" on my SAS cost under $200. Thats the chap part. Start adding hi steer, TREs, new brakes, Gears ,and all teh other crap it came out closer to probably $2000. Next round will be linking the front though.

well hi steer sounds like a good idea anyways soo i might just go that way, im gonna get some parts together and get the sas total pieced together off the truck then itll go smoother puttin it on

I got my hi steer arm from sky manufacturing. They have one that is a bit taller then others I saw which allow it to clear springs easier. Nice quality piece. One of these days I will go completly histeer instead of just cross over. To go compltly Histeer you have to cut the engine cross member out of the way alot which also requires re routing a brake line. I didnt want to do that so I just went histeer and built beefy steering links.

ok ill check there

after seeing alot of people run 37's with only 8" of lift, im thinking bout maybe i should shoot for 12" of lift? and 39.5's iroks, you think that will be to much or enough of lift?
4.88 gears or 5.13s?

As low as possible and as high as neccesary. When I did my SAS my goal was to keep the truck as low as possible. I think I ended up with around 6" of lift or so on 35"s I plan on using 37"s eventually and wont lift it any higher. I do alot of off camber stuff and by having the truck low it makes it much more stable. I run 4.88s with 35"s I would get 5.13s if you plan on running 39"s if not deeper gears. However 39"s are alot of tire for a dana 44 and you might have a hard time keeping it togetehr if you wheel it hard.

i dont really wheel hard, i just want a monster truck, and i figure i could build one and get atleast 13 mpg in the city. itll be used on some decent trails, but nothin major.
i just dont know what tires, i really want a radial but all the radials at this size are soo pricey, i think i might have to settle with bias

how much did your hy steer cost?

and what leaf springs should i use?

ok what would be better, crossmember on the front with or without shackles? what can i use as a rear leaf springs mount if i dont use shackles in the back?

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125858 All the info on my SAS.

I probably have $600 in my steering. However if I wouldnt have done histeer I probably still would have spent $400. So Histeer cost me about $200 extra.

As far as leafs and which way to put the shackle it is all a matter of opinion. I did mine the way I did to keep the truck as low as possible. To many veriables to say. Pick one way and stick with it.

wranger leaf springs or wagoneer leaf springs?
where did you get your rear spring mounts from?
do you think i would rub 13.5 or 14.5 wide tires on the leaf springs?

I used wranglers. Wagoneer springs could work as well. They are the same length just have the center pin in a different spot

Rear mounts are stock ranger ones. I just moved the front mount forward for the long springs. Everything up front I built myself with a welder, drill, and a grinder.

Tire rub will depend on rim back spacing. I have alot of back spacing so they rub on mine. I am planning on adding spacers to the front to get rid of that problem.

well i already have my wheels they are 3 or 3.5" bs(i dont remember)

i can put springs peaches, on a coil spung eb axle right?

The fall peaches are preferable, they are a little stronger. ;) :D

I would guess that you could, but you would have to grind off the C wedges that are already on the axle. It seems counterproductive on an axle and a truck that are so easy to use coils on.

I agree :D

About 1/2 an hour of cutting with an angle grinder.

I just cut mine off, my advice, use a torch or plasma cutter first for the coil seats and trac bar mounts, and grind through the welds on the wedges.

good to hear, i want to have this be as simple as possible, since its my first major fab job.

ive working on the same setup, EB d44 and waggy leafs. Right now both have cost me a total of $70. So just take you time and look for deals. ABout steering, if you lookup a member named skunk he has a 2ndgen on a waggy d44 with waggy leafs and its pretty big, fits 35's easy. he is also running the stock waggy steering with no steering issues. I was plannin on hysteer but dont have the money so untill i do I will just use the stock setup. If you want a monster truck, its definatly the biggest explorer ive ever seen in person.

AS far as shackle in front or back, shackle in front will give you better offroad handling, and has the potential for less issues with the driveshaft and t-case. Shackle reversal will offer a smoother ride for ovbious reasons, but I have heard of cases where it has been done and when the front suspension takes a big jolt the driveshaft pushes into the t-case, effectivly destroying it. Also on hill-climbs the axle will try and "walk away" from the vehicle, loosing you traction. But like you said, it will mainly be a pavement princess :p so I would go with a reversal.
