Hello everyone, I new here so please bear with me. I've got a problem that I can't figure out. I have a 00' XLT with the 4.0 SOHC, the problem that i'm having is, when the engine is cold it won't start unless i give it a little bit of gas and it won't idle until it is warmed up.

Now it doesn't do it all the time and i noticed it started running a little rough about 2 mths ago. also i heard that these plastic intakes are prone to cracking..could that be a possibility?

To me it sounds like it is not getting fuel when this occurs, maybe an injector sticking open making it lose pressure?? It only has 60,x.. miles on it and the only thing that has been done to it is the left camshaft chain tensioner replacement.

Please help
Eric

I just check it again and i can smell gas when it stalls. Does that help any???

There are several possibilites.
Once it starts, does it idle fine ?

Are you up on the maintainace ? ie plugs, wires, air filter and so on ?

Welcome to the site. Don't be a stranger

How old are your plugs, wires, fuel filter? Do you get a check engine light at all?

The plugs and fuel filter were replaced about 8 mths ago, i haven't replaced the wires. When it starts it won't idle until it warms up and when it does it idles rough and the check engine light does not come on.

Try cleaning the IAC (Idle Air Control valve). Plenty of threads about how.

Well, I cleaned the IAC and the MAF and the same thing happens(by the way is the engine supposed to cut of if you unplug the IAC when it is warmed up?)

Anyhow any ideas????? Also i have the haynes manual and i noticed that my explorer doen not have repeat does not have the IAT sensor or the VIS which to my understanding is on 97' and later SOHC.

Mine is a 2000 is it supposed to have that stuff??

PLEASE HELP!!! very confused here.

I replaced the IAC today, and now when it starts it will idle at aroud 800 rpm and then drop to barely running.

Is anyone out there????

No help????

your lower intake gaskets. There was a recall on them. Check that

They were replaced as well.

Any ideas??

I just finished replacing the plugs and wires..again. It starts fine now but it still drops down to 500rpm, any ideas on what could be making it do that??

Try wiping out the throttle body. Make sure that someone did not mess with the Idle stop screw. Also , does it Idle up slightly when you turn on the A/C or turn the steering wheel? If it idles smoothly at this point and does not stall, it may be ok.

When you did all this stuff did you disconnect the negative terminal for 15 minutes to allow the computer to reset?

try testing the coolant temp switch for the computer if this is bad it will give the pcm false readings about engine temp and can cause stalling
