I just installed infinity perfectys 12d sub (one) powered by a JBL 1200.1 amp. It was running good and then it started to smell like burning rubber...I turned it off but i need to know what could be cuasing this horrible smell and what kinda damage could have been done to the new sub and amp!

nice choice on the subwoofer and amp. but they dont play well together. that subwoofer cant handle the power that the amp puts out. Infinity subs are notorious for cooking with only rms power. so when you give them more than that, dont expect it to last long. wire the coils in series. and dont forget to break the sub in for about 10-15 hours before cranking it.

wire in a series and not parallel? why is that? and is there any perminent damage? i only used it for like 10 min b4 noticing the smell and turning it off.

series will increase the impedence. with the coils wired in parallel, you are pushing that sub way too hard.
hopefully there is no permanent damage, but usually once they start to burn, they never play the same again. sometimes the sound is a little different, and usually they wont perform as well as they used to or hit as hard as it could. but you might be lucky. if there is a problem, dont worry, it's still under warranty.
good luck

should i get adifferent sub or would that one work okay? I am hoping to get another one soon...should i just return that one and get a totally differentr one?! What would work good with the amp? Or should i return the amp and get a different sub? Any type of advice woulld be good ;) thanx for replying

I am noticing similar problems with my infinity kappa perfect. It has the smell of burning rubber and now when it hits hard it has a loud rattle coming from the sub. The amp I have is a sony xplod 300watt. I have only had the sub since december.

if the shop where you bought it will let you trade up for a better sub that can handle more power then go for it. if not, then get the replacement infinity, and wire it in series. then you wont be overdriving the sub. lots of people have problems with those subs because infinity over rates the power handling of the voice coils. they are good subs and have decent sound quality, but dont feed them too much power.

yeah, that's the voice coils. you melted them.

my has a loud rattle but if i push the sub cone in it sounds like something clicks into place...that works until it hits hard a couple more times then it goes back to rattling...im just going to return it!!!!
